Phil was my classmate at Columbia University. We took calculus together and going into the final , I was flunking and Phil was a master at it. Friday, before the final on Monday , I was on the phone with Phil getting a complete summary of Calculus of the previous 4 months. I passed with a B-, thanks completely to Phil.

I remember Philip so well. He was in my medical school graduating class of 1973, we took are internship and residencies together, and we both went into private practice on Long Island, he into pulmonology and I into medical oncology. He was a great physician well loved by his patients and his colleagues, and we sometimes worked on cases together. I will always remember him. He was the best.

To Dr. Marcus family...I still think of him often, and frequently tell stories about what a fabulous doctor and man he was, how kind of lovely he was with my infant son Tim (who so now 10). And I always make people laugh with my imitation of him when he would sit me down in his office after some asthma tests (esp. when I was being a delinquent and non-medication compliant patient), look at me with that deadpan look, and announce, Ya breathing STINKS! I suppose nothing to laugh at for a normal person, but he cracked me up every time. I really miss him. I hope youre all doing well and have found some measure of peace.

It was such a shock finding out this most wonderful man and doctor has passed away. my daughter who will be 21 in November was his patient since she was 2 years old. This wonderful Doctor who was coming home from vacation got the call my daughter was in emergency room and they wanted to operate on her lung.He came from the airport after a very long flight and stopped them he said "give me 2 days and they will not have to operate".God bless him he saw us through 7 days in intensive care and I brought my 7 year old home with everything she was born with.My daughter Carly was always thrilled to go see "her" Doctor Marcus. the angels brought that great man right up to heaven prayers are with his family. many thanks.

It is a very sad day hearing the loss of a brilliant doctor. I was sent to Dr. Marcus by Dr. Sharon Markivics. While perhaps Dr. Marcus was all business, the mention of his grandchildren would change his facial expression immediately. May he be with God, in peace, and pain free. May his family be watched over by God, and a personal thank you to his family for sharing him where he was needed. His staff is superb and I hope they will have some peace in the future

I was saddened to hear of Phil's passing. I was his intern in 1974. He was a great teacher and clinician. I also knew him as an attending physician when I was doing my pulmonary fellowship. He loved to eat and would tell me about his bowl of ice cream every night - he would have a very modest lunch to compensate. Over the years when I saw his photo in various publications for which he wrote articles, I would smile and remember Phil and the fun we had together treating patients and learning medicine - yes it was fun. I will miss him. His wife and family should take solace in how many people he positively affected during his life. G-d bless him.

Words cannot express the respect I had for this man and the utmost trust to take care of my chronic pulmonary problems. I was referred to him to rule out a hilar mass over 10 years ago that never existed in the first place. His confidence and true dedication was so obvious that at that moment in time it was more than clear, he was now my doctor and the best of the best. "Thank you for being you Dr. Marcus aka Dr. Miracle...You are so missed"...Prayers and love to his family, medical family/colleagues and all of us who were blessed to be treated and healed by him. Comparable to none! Sleep with the angels in peace...

The world has lost such a gentle soul. Dr. Marcus worked miracles with my daughter's health. Coming to him after months in intensive care and rehab still undiagnosed and walking around with an oxygen tank at age 19, he was able to gain our trust and respect and work to get my daughter breathing without oxygen. He was always honest about her prognosis without being grim. We loved how he was a realist. He would always say "well, you are no better, but you are no worse-I'll take it" He cared, and it showed. He always went the extra steps, he worked with our other Doctors and never complained about all the paperwork her case generated. He was truly the best. I hope that reading how he touch the lives of his patients brings you some comfort. Our deepest sympathies to your entire family during this trying time. Please know that he will never be forgotten. Dr. Marcus was my Dr for almost twenty years. I have been going to Dr. Marcus since I was four years old when he saved my life from an Asthma attack. As a child I remember Dr. Marcus always being a calm and reassuring presence that always could lighten the mood of the seriousness of the disease I had. Thanks to Dr. Marcus I never had to be hospitalized for Asthma again. I saw Dr. Marcus in February when I went for my 6th month check up. During my visit I asked him “How does it look” he responded “Its not too bad, but it's also not too good”. Today my asthma is now back under control, and I was very excited to share this with him tomorrow for my 3 month checkup, until I got a letter in the mail explaining that he wouldn't be in during those office hours. I didn't think anything of it, and called up to reschedule. That is when I learned of his passing. He was an incredible Dr, and my Heart goes out to his wife, children, and grandchildren along with all his patients. He will be greatly missed.

When I pull into my office parking spot-I automatically look to see if "Doctor Phil" is next to me. It is very hard to realize I'll never see his Mercedes there again. Even as busy as he always seemed, he would take time to call me down to his office for that last minute financial item that required his or RO's signature. I learned to give him the "facts and just the facts" then he would make an informed decision-and off I'd go to complete his financial planning task. I can not tell if he had a premonition of his fate-about two weeks before they went to Paris-he told me: "take care of my family!" Even to the end he was a great husband and father / grandfather. I'll miss him like everyone else. Doug Hyer his financial advisor in Great Neck.

My heart breaks for the loss of a truly brillant ,warm and professional gentleman as Dr Marcus.I met Dr.Marcus 31 years ago in the ER of North Shore Hospital during the pregnancy of my first daughter during a severe asthma attack. His dilgence, expertise and gentle nature made all the difference at a very difficult time. He continued through the years to be devoted to my health and would always be tenacious when health difficulties occurred. The trust and respect I have for him is unyielding.Thank you to all the Marcus family for sharing such a remarkable man. With deepest sympathy.

To Dr. Marcus' family, please accept my sympathy and condolences. To say he will be missed is a sore understatement. You are all in my thoughts. Dr. Marcus was my pulmonologist for over 10 years. Not only was he a wonderful doctor who helped me get my asthma under control for the first time in my life, but he was also a kind and gentle man. When my son Tim was an infant, he started seeing Dr. Marcus for breathing concerns as well. When Dr. Marcus held Tim for the first time, I was stunned at the playfulness and sweetness that he showed. He was an extremely busy man, but he always took the time to play with Tim, show him his little animals, do silly voices...and Tim responded to him with such happiness and joy. I always appreciated the way Dr. Marcus never spoke down to me, and always made me feel like a true partner in my own health care. He'd do the necessary tests, share the results with me, and then say, "What do YOU think we should do?" I've never had a doctor respect my opinion in such a way. He was a wonderful man, and I already miss him very much.

My deepest sympathies to the Marcus family. I was a new patient of Dr Marcus & he diagnosed my problem & helped me to feel better. He reassured me & told me not to worry you will be fine. He took the fear I had away & gave me peace of mind. He was a caring & compassionate man. Some doctors just don't take the time to treat their patients as a whole and he did. My condolences to the entire Marcus family. Dr Marcus taught most of the undergraduate and graduate therapeutics or pulmonology courses in the mid to late 70's at Saint John's University, College of Pharmacy. Being a pharmacist and physician, he was an excellent Adjunct Professor, sharing all his real-time office and hospital clinical challenges with us. He was one of the best teachers I have ever had. I have had the opportunity to bump into him several times over the years at conferences. In addition to an excellent clinician, he was always a perfect gentleman who will be missed by the thousands of lives he has touched.

Dr. Marcus was loved by all at NYCOM. His teachings were performed with a perfect blend of knowledge, humor and humility. A year ago, I had the privilege of conversing with him at a pharmaceutical dinner, and we had one of the most thought provoking conversations I have ever had, spanning the topics of religion, spirituality, and medicine, of course. He was truly a wonderful man, and it is a shame that so many people in the future will miss out on having the opportunity to be in his presence.

I have been a patient of Dr Marcus since the early 80's. I had been to many doctors, but not one of them could diagnose my problem. I met with Dr Marcus and he immediately knew what the problem was and how to handle it. Unfortunately, my employer changed health insurance companies and Dr Marcus did not accept my new insurance. I had to find someone who did. I felt bad leaving but I had no other choice. Awhile later, I changed insurance carriers again, and this time he did participate in my plan. I immediately went back to his office. I have serious health issues, and I thank God for Dr Marcus. His staff was always helpful. He would go over and beyond to help in any way he could. He will be greatly missed. I am deeply saddened by his passing.
There will never be another Dr Marcus, he was one of a kind. My condolences to his family. He was truly the best.
R.I.P. Dr Marcus.

There are no words I can say to lessen your loss - but I can tell you what Dr Marcus Meant to me.
I am a long time patient of Dr Marcus - Since 1993, and I can tell you this
As a Doctor - he was the very best there is...there are at least 3 occasions when I know it was only his perseverance that kept me alive...the most memorable is when knowing I could no longer handle the amount of steroids I needed to keep breathing he went in search of something new and untried. Dr Marcus consulted with The Asthma Institute in Denver and came up with a plan to use Methotrexate for the first time to treat a patient for asthma (at least to my knowledge), I can say his passion , dedication and perseverance worked because I am here today as living proof of the caliber of physician he was.
As a man - you of course know him best but I would like to tell you what he meant to me - Dr Marcus went above and beyond being a doctor to me...often times he was the strict father figure making me fight to keep going and in one memory I treasure I woke in an ICU bed with him standing there holding my hand saying Francine there isn't any other patient I would be here with on Rosh Hashanah. To say that I feel as if I have lost so much more then a doctor or a friend or a family member is the only way I can tell you just how truly remarkable, and special, and absolutely one of a kind Dr. Marcus was.
I know I can't truly say to you the words I feel in my heart...please know you are in my prayers...and please know how much I will miss him.
Thank you for the many times over the last almost 20 years that he must have been called away from you, and you so graciously allowed him to go to take care of me.
Sincerely,
Francine A. McLean
