RAYMOND NEINSTEIN Obituary

NEINSTEIN--Raymond L., of Sea Cliff and Brooklyn, New York, died on June 1, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Nemser, his son, Adam Neinstein, his daughter-in-law, Kimberly Nemzoff, his sister-in-law, Erica Nemser Crowley, Erica's daughter, Ariel Crowley and an international network of wonderful friends. Ray was a teacher and scholar of American Literature, American Studies and English language. After graduating from Far Rockaway High School, U.C. Berkeley, attending Cambridge University and receiving his Ph.D from the University at Buffalo, he taught in schools all over the world, including Colby College, the U.N. School, universities and colleges in Maine, Krakow, Wroclaw, Budapest, Pocatello, and, most recently, at Kingsborough Community College. He was an avid reader and had an intense love of good books. He also had a deep interest in Holocaust studies and compassion for any person or animal who was suffering. As a songwriter, Ray crafted beautiful, interesting and funny songs, inspired by his love of country, folk, soul, gospel and rock music and musicians. His friends hope that he's now spending time and making music with Elvis, Chuck Berry, Guy Clark, John Prine and his other departed favorites. Donations in Ray's honor and memory may be made to: PETA, Partners in Health, Nature Conservancy, Doctors Without Borders, Oglala Lakota College, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, The Museum of Jewish Heritage, Coalition for the Homeless, L.C. Bates Museum, or any charitable organization that cares for animals or the environment.

I am saddened to learn at this late date of Ray's death in 2021. He was one of my professors at Colby in the 1970s. I did an independent study with him on Jewish American literature that I remember to this day. I'm a better writer and person for having known him. May he rest in the embrace of Hashem.

I miss Ray.
Thanks to his knowledge and our conversations, I discovered current writers I would not have known.
His literary knowledge was contagious.
He was a special presence in our KCC family.

I fondly remember working with Ray at Kingsborough Community College. We worked in the same ESL program. He was a resource for books. He read voraciously, so I could get a recommendation at any time. His students really respected him too.

Ray and I shared a classroom. Because I often stayed late and he often came in early, we had time to talk about things other than work. I miss those times. He really cared about the people around him, was a voracious reader, and enjoyable to be with. He made CLIP a better place to be.

Dear Kathy and Adam, I have heard about Ray with pain and tears. He was and still is one of the best friends of mine. A few month ago I wondered to have a chanse to meet him and share love and grief about tragedy of Holocaust. Ray will stay forever in my mind and touching memories of our meetings in Kraków. I send you from depth of my heart condolences and I enshure you that you will stay in my heart the closest Friends as Ray do. Hugs and love, yours Antek
