ROBERT COLE Obituary

COLE--Robert Vail Jr., 49, of New York City died August 3, 2011 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was an accomplished architect specializing in the preservation of historic structures. As a Principal of the New York firm Swanke Hayden Connell Architects, Rob oversaw restoration works that included New York City's Hall of Records and Criminal Courts, New York City Public School 157, the Federal Triangle IRS Headquarters Building in Washington DC, and the West Virginia State Capitol. He was the primary author of Historic Preservation - Project Planning and Estimating, the first comprehensive guide on planning and cost estimating for historic preservation. Prior to joining SHCA in 1998, Rob was Corporate Officer with the firm of Carey & Co., serving as project manager for award-winning projects including the seismic upgrade and rehabilitation of San Francisco's City Hall, War Memorial Opera House, and Spreckels Temple of Music. Graduate of the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts. Born in Hudson, Ohio. Son of the late Robert Cole and survived by his mother Dolores Cole, sisters Sandra Brown, Patricia Gralow, Priscilla Murray, Wendy Aguilar, and nine nieces and nephews. Rob touched the lives of countless people with his intellect, humor, passion, and warmth. Donations may be sent in memory of Rob to the Greenwich Village Society of Historic Preservation, 232 East 11th Street New York, NY 10003 or www.gvhsp.org. Memorial service to be held at a later date.
