ROGER GOLDMAN Obituary

GOLDMAN--Roger O. Roger O. Goldman, 79, of New York, NY passed away on July 1st, 2024, surrounded by his wife (Fern) and four children (Jodi, Cindi, Jake, and Ben). Roger - or Rog - was born on March 9th, 1945 to Erwin and Dorothy Goldman. Roger spent the first years of his life living with his grandparents in the Bronx before moving to Manhattan when his sister (Amy) and brother (Sam) were born. The early years of his childhood were "idyllic," with the New York Giants baseball team playing a huge role. Some of Roger's last words were recounting the passion and joy with which Willie Mays played. In 1955(ish), the Goldman family moved to Teaneck, NJ, where Roger spent his adolescent years proudly causing trouble. His happy place was in Pomona, NY with his adored Grandparents Harris and Ida. Roger received his B.A in Marketing from NYU and his J.D. from American University. Roger's career spanned decades with many reinventions along the way. Recently Roger brought his extensive experience to corporate and non-profit boards, including serving as Chairman of the Executive Committee of American Express National Bank. More importantly, he served as a trusted advisor to the next generation of business leaders and supported causes that were important to him. Roger had an enormous impact on anyone who spent time with him. In his later years, he said he "wanted to be remembered for being a husband, father, grandfather, and friend." As a husband to Fern, he was thoughtful, caring, and full of intellectual energy. As a father to his four children, he spent every moment telling them how much he loved them and encouraging them to live their lives to the fullest. As the "GP" to Max, Leo, and Noah, he was arguably his best self- silly, loud, and filled with joy. To his nieces and nephews, he was Uncle Banana. As a loyal friend to so many, he was always there to listen and offer valued advice - both solicited and unsolicited. Roger's favorite quote was from Ralph Waldo Emerson: "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." Roger spent every day leading a purposeful life. Roger was fundamentally guided by his values and doing what he thought was right. For that lesson and so many more, we will forever be grateful. Roger is survived by his wife Fern Portnoy, his sister Amy, his children and their spouses Jodi (Rich), Cindi (Carrol), Jake (Roni), and Ben (Jessi), his grandchildren (Max, Leo, Noah, and future grandchildren), his wife's family (Rachael, Mark, Caroline, Lucy), and her step-daughters (Kelly, Mary, Megan). We were not done talking with him. In tribute to Roger's legacy, he would want you to remember that "what you send out is what you get back!"

I worked with Roger at NatWest New York. He was a big personality and an innovative and unique thinker and I learnt a tremendous amount from him, particularly how to value and not compromise in serving customers. These lessons subsequently stood me in good stead for much of the rest of my career. My deepest condolences to all the family.

Very, very saddened and a bit shocked to see this news. I first met Roger when he was serving on one of the Bank Boards at American Express. When presenting a new product concept or reviewing a business line, Roger alway asked great questions...and found that important balance between managing risk and encouraging innovation. About eight years ago, we ran into each other at a mutual friend's July 4th party in the Berkshires. Every summer since, I would get an email from him to meet for breakfast at Mom's in South Egremont. Roger would be back in the area for the summer, and either had an idea he was excited about or just wanted to check-in to see how things were going. I so enjoyed this time with him. In the interim, we would run into each other and chat at various charity events in the Berkshires. In fact, I just saw him in June at a BIFF event...and we made tentative plans to together for breakfast in July. I will miss that time not spent together. My sincere condolences to his family.

I literally knew Roger my entire life as we were "Pomona" kids growing up. Later in life, when I needed guidance and help in seeking a new profession Roger helped guide me and had sage advice, "Do something that you love doing. ". I followed this suggestion and to this day think often about Roger and his mentorship when I most needed it. I will miss him.

I worked for Roger at NatWest Bank, where he created a sea change in banking and turned the organization around (and upside down, in typical Roger fashion). He made me move out of my comfort zone and achieve great things. He did have major impact on all he knew!

My condolences to the entire extended Goldman family. I was Roger's brother-in-law when married to his sister, Amy. We shared a love of flying and owned an airplane together. As a certified flight instructor, I taught Roger to fly our airplane at Teterboro Airport, although he got too busy to complete his training and get is license. He was an inspiration to me from the time I started dating his sister in 1963. He will be missed.

Roger was my brother-in-law & we were very close while he was married to my sister. While I only saw once in the past 50 years, I remained very fond of him & was greatly saddened to hear of his passing from his daughter, Jodi, my niece.

Roger was an extraordinary person, embodying generosity, thoughtfulness, and wisdom. The life lessons he imparted to me as a teenager remain invaluable, even two decades later. He will forever hold a special place in my heart, and a part of me goes with him. Rest in sweet peace, dear Roger.
