BENTON--Sallie, was born on September 20, 1934 in Kansas City, MO. After going to the University of Kansas she moved to New York where she became perpetually late. May it bring Peace to all our grieving hearts that Sallie and Benton, beloved souls, are together again, surely in Paradise, everlasting. On Earth we are thankful that they both live on in their son who they adored and who we love. Lily and Lou

I am so so sad to hear that Sallie passed away, and that I didn't know about this when it happened! She was a wonderful person, a sparkling person and someone I admired. Much love to her family.

Shocked and gutted to learn this so late. Sallie hired me as a model sometime around 1990 to pose for her drawing group. After the first session she pulled me aside and said "I have to paint you" - and she did, over and over, for over a year, in a series of portraits that looked like me, like her, like people in my life she'd not met. And as she painted, we looked at each other hard and talked about work, family, art, and love - (kind of all the same thing, I think she'd agree) - the upshot was that we both ended up going to graduate school - she to paint at Yale, where she shook up and warmed up a whole department, and I to at CUNY, where I explored the idea of artists and models in literature. We remained dear friends through the decades. She was unlike any of the artists I befriended in my years as a model - singularly full of joy and vitality and readiness to be in the world as well as looking at it. She was as socially energetic as she was artistically gifted - a professional wife , a watchful mother, and a driven artist all at once. One of the things we talked about was how to sort those things out...and how not to. She was also a wonderfully generous and loyal friend. We saw each other in ways it had never occurred to either of us to be seen, and it made a huge difference to both of us. It's hardly imaginable that she's gone. I mourn her loss, and treasure her memory. An extraordinary woman.
