STANLEY DARROW Obituary

DARROW--Stanley, a New York City dentist and dental professor, died on June 22, 2014 at the age of 87. A native of the Bronx, Dr. Darrow graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1944 after which he enlisted in the US Army. After serving in the Philippines, he attended college at the NYU College of Arts and Pure Science, receiving his BA degree in 1948, and the NYU College of Dentistry, from which he was awarded his DDS degree in 1953. Dr. Darrow subsequently entered the private practice of dentistry, and continued to treat patients until shortly before his death. Dr. Darrow was renowned as a compassionate and dedicated practitioner to celebrities and high profile business executives. In addition, he had a passion for teaching dental students and residents. He maintained an appointment at the NYU College of Dentistry from 1953-1976, attaining the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry, and afterward served as attending dentist in the Flushing Hospital Dental Residency Program. A member of the New York State and County Dental Societies, Dr. Darrow was a regular lecturer at the annual meeting of the First District Dental Society. His honors and awards include membership in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, and fellowships in the American College of Dentists and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Darrow maintained residences on Sutton Place in Manhattan and in Sherman, CT. He enjoyed traveling and collecting antiques with his wife, Vivienne, listening to Dixieland jazz and swing music, and playing banjo and guitar. He is survived by his sons Jonathan, David, and Andrew; grandchildren Evan, Julia, Emily, Nicole, Joshua, and Gwendolyn; and sister Phyllis. A reception celebrating Dr. Darrow's life will be held at the family residence in Manhattan on July 12 and 13 from 11am to 6pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sherman Library, P.O. Box 40, Sherman, CT 06784, or to the Sherman Jewish Community Center, 9 Route 39 South, Sherman, CT 06784.

Dr. Darrow was my attending at Flushing hospital when I was a resident in 2002. Over the years we were attendings on the same day. It is with great sadness that I heard of his passing. I admired and greatly respected Dr. Darrow's wisdom and his love of his family and the arts. May your family know that you are wonderful, well-respected, and missed by so many.

When I starting teaching in the Operative Dentistry Department of NYU College of Dentistry in 1972 Stanley was an existing legend in the department. He was renown for his academic acuity, clinical skill, and for being a mensch during a time when menschen were in short supply. He remained a gentleman until the end. I will miss him. My condolences to his dear family and all his friends.

Dr.Darrow was my dentist for many years. He took excellent care of me. We would listen to Jazz while he was working on me.. He would tell great stories about Jazz history or we talk about other things. He was definately one of the Greatest generation. May his soul soar like an eagle. Healing prayers & thoughts to his family and friends.
Fondly,

The loveliest, kindest, nicest, smartest, funniest and most talented man I had the privilege to know my whole life. A lifelong great friend to both of my parents. A Super Mensch. I am lucky to have a second generation friendship with Jon because of our parents (he was a wonderful Dad to his sons). We lost a great one. May the whole family be warmed by how much he was adored. I will always see that smile when I think of him. Oh, those White Meadow bonds. Goodbye Stan.
Always, Dale Greenfeld
