WALTER BURKE Obituary
The Trustees, Fellows, and staff of the Morgan Library & Museum mourn the loss of Walter Burke, Trustee since 1989 and Life Trustee since 2008. Walter valued excellence and sought to extend its reach and impact. The Morgan benefitted from his generosity and exceptional leadership of the Sherman Fairchild Foundation, grants from which led to the naming of the Sherman Fairchild Reading Room and the Sherman Fairchild Head of the Thaw Conservation Center. In an inspired initiative of Walter's, a special grant during the financial crisis a decade ago sustained core programs at a critical moment. Among many forms of support, the Foundation is helping make possible the restoration of the 1906 library. Walter's leadership was as bold and strategic as it was respectful and supportive. In 2011 he was awarded the rarely bestowed Morgan Medal for exemplary service to the institution. We offer heartfelt condolences to Walter Burke's widow, Constance Morse Burke, his children, Bonnie Burke Himmelman, Walter Burke III, Diane Burke, and Nancy Burke Tunney, and their families.
