WALTER STERN Obituary

STERN--Walter Phillips, (Wally) died peacefully and unexpectedly at home on February 27, 2022 at age 93. Wally was born on September 26, 1928, in Manhattan. He graduated from New Rochelle High School in 1946, from Williams College Phi Beta Kappa in 1950 and from Harvard Business School with distinction in 1952. After graduation he served as an officer in the USAF. Wally had an impactful career at Burnham & Company and later at Capital Group Companies where he worked from 1973 to his retirement at age 89. He was Chairman of the Institute for Chartered Financial Analysts and the Financial Analysts Federation where he pioneered the CFA exams. He taught investments at several business schools and served as mentor for countless investment professionals. Wally served on the boards and helped manage the portfolios of many nonprofits. He devoted himself to support of the State of Israel and promoting policies in favor of American exceptionalism at home and abroad. He was Chairman of the Hudson Institute for decades and helped found the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. He often commented that his greatest achievement was raising a quality family with his wonderful wife. In addition to his wife of 64 years Betsy May Stern, Wally is survived by his children Sarah May Stern (Mark Rosenblatt), Willy May Stern (Ann Shapiro) and David May C. Stern (Mary Elizabeth Calhoon); his grandchildren Judd Rosenblatt (Melanie Plaza), Rebecca Rosenblatt (Ben Manson), Tom Rosenblatt, Zachariah Stern, Phoebe Stern, Kasey Stern, Gavin Stern and Fiona Stern; two great-grand- children Trent Rosenblatt and Leo Manson; and younger brother Richard Stern (Phyllis Edelstein). He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Marjorie Stern and his brother Robert Stern. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hudson Institute or The Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
