Daniel Kormanik Obituary

Daniel Andrew Kormanik, 80 years young, of Bedford, Va., flew his last flight home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday, February 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Daniel "Dan" was born September 6, 1944, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late John and Helen Orlosky Kormanik of Nemacolin. He graduated from Carmichaels Area High School in 1963, attended Waynesburg College, then flight school in Houston, Texas, receiving his multi- engine rating and flight instructor licenses. Dan started his distinguished commercial aviation career at Greene County Airport in Waynesburg in 1964 as a flight instructor, and assistant airport manager. His flight career took off from there with U.S. Steel Corp. flying the Vickers Viscount multi-engine turboprop. During this time he also proudly served as a sergeant in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard with the 147th Military Airlift Station in Coraopolis. He then flew for MacDonald's Corp. in Chicago, Ill., Columbia Gas Corp. in Columbus, Ohio, Motorola Corp. in Chicago, Ill. and ended with International Paper Corp. in Westchester, N.Y. Dan logged more than 22,000 flight hours over his 43-year career and was typed rated in many aircraft including the G-I, G-II, Falcon 20, 50 and 900. In addition to flying aircraft, Dan served actively with the U.S. Military during the civil conflict and U.S. intervention in the Dominican Republic. He was both a columnist and contributor to Professional Pilot Magazine. He was passionate and active in local politics as well as both building and renovating homes. He loved to read, discuss politics, and spend time with his family. He heroically and most naturally fought bladder cancer for 17 years! Dan is survived and missed by his loving and devoted wife, Christel Oebel Kormanik of 42 years. Remaining to cherish his memory are his brother, John (Sharon) Kormanik; his five daughters, Kelley (Timothy) Mathews, Monica (Gaetan) DeBellis, Natasha (Scott) Albecker, Katrina (Doug) Bonjour, Shanna (Haris) Sakellarides; 12 (soon to be 13) grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Dan's final landing - services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 10 in Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, 1050 West Main Street, Berryville, VA 22611. Burial to follow at Cool Spring Natural Cemetery, 901 Cool Spring Lane, Berryville, Va. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Thomas Road Worldwide (TRWW.org). Just learned of Danny's passing. My late husband Gene Urbany enjoyed talks with Danny, and I was very fond of his Mom.
