Alan Wood Vann, 57, passed away on Sunday evening, May 13, 2012. Alan was born on May 20, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama to Bob and Jane Vann. He grew up in Illinois; then he studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received a B.S. in Industrial Management in 1978. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. After college, he moved to Oklahoma where he met his wife, Melissa Harbison, and they were married on June 18, 1983. He worked in the oil and gas industry, most recently as a project procurement manager with Chevron. He enjoyed traveling. Throughout his life, he would call several states across the US and around the world 'home', including Virginia, Massachusetts, Singapore, Qatar, and Indonesia. Everywhere he lived, Alan surrounded himself and his family with music and the church. Alan became a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church when he and his wife moved to Kingwood. He served as clerk to the vestry, a member of the finance committee, the sub-organist, a bass singer in the choir, and a member of the train club. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Melissa; daughters, Laurelin Vann Story and her husband, Caleb, and Heather Vann; mother, Jane Vann; sister, Beth Vann; uncle, Warren Vann; aunt, Anne Johnson; and many cousins. He is predeceased by his father, Bob Vann. The memorial service for Alan was held on May 18, 2012 at Good Shepherd. The Reverend William Richter presided over the service, and Jackson Hearn, director of music ministries performed Alan's favorite organ works and directed the Good Shepherd Choir. Alan Vann's ashes will be interred in the columbarium at Good Shepherd. Service arrangements were made by Darst Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be sent to the Music Ministry of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 2929 Woodland Hills Dr., Kingwood, TX 77339.

Dear Jane & Family
Please accept my deepest condolences on the sudden loss of Alan. May you take a measure of comfort in the knowledge that those of us who knew him carry fond memories of him with us. I remember the many times Alan and I spent long hours together at your home trying to out think each other at games of strategy. Alan usually prevailed, which is probably why I remember it. I believe it helped me be a better person.
