John Lee Pundt

1937 - 2025

John Lee Pundt passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, in Boerne, Texas, at the age of 88.

He was born on February 20, 1937, in Amarillo, Texas. Due to his father's work as a pipeline engineer,

John's early years were spent moving throughout Texas and Colorado before the family eventually settled

in Houston. There, he attended Lamar High School, where he became an accomplished member of the

football team.

He earned a football scholarship to Wharton Junior College, and he later transferred to the University of

Texas, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism.

While both John and Peggy Jo Wright attended Lamar High School, fate brought them together at the

University of Texas. They were married on August 28, 1959, in Houston, Texas, and shared 66 wonderful

years together.

John began his journalism career as Sports Editor in Temple, Texas. He eventually became the editor and

owner of the Humble Echo newspaper. After retiring from the newspaper business, John continued his

service to the community as the Director of Precinct 4 Parks in Harris County.

He eventually retired, but his legacy lived on through the development of Pundt Park, which broke ground

in 2008. Pundt Park is a 380-acre park in Spring, Texas, that features two lakes, playgrounds, picnic area

with pavilions, canoe launch, and equestrian and multiuse trails.

John had an abiding love for all things Texas-especially its rich history and geography. When meeting

someone new, his favorite icebreaker was always, "Where are you from?" If the answer was anywhere in

Texas, he could almost certainly name the county and its seat without hesitation. He had an

encyclopedic knowledge of all 254 Texas counties and took great pride in it. With a familiar twinkle in his

eye, he'd often remark that he couldn't quite understand why anyone would want to live anywhere else.

John was preceded in death by his beloved son, John Hart Pundt; his sister, Sue Pundt Williford; and his

parents, John Halley and Mary Fay Pundt.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Peggy Jo Pundt; his daughter, Amanda "Mandy" Pundt Ciotti and sonin-law, George Ciotti; and two beloved grandchildren, George Hart Ciotti and Sadie Marie Ciotti. He is

also lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.

John will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his steadfast integrity, his self-taught

guitar playing, his competitive spirit at the domino table, and his lifelong passion for the state of Texas.

A memorial service celebrating John's life will take place at:
