I knew Barry, Aka "Gumper" for a little over 30 years when, in our late twenties, we both joined a bowling league in Michigan. We hit it off from the get-go ... mostly because neither one of us was there to actually bowl! Even during the first conversation, you just knew he was one of those people that had a glass half-full attitude of gratitude toward life. He was a lot of fun and I truly can't recall any time when he wasn't laughing or telling a joke. And I never saw him lose his temper, not once, he was always so balanced.
Our friendship took a break for a few years when we each went our separate ways and yet, somehow we both ended up in Florida and got in touch again. It was like the break never happened, we took up where we left off ... usually with me laughing at his jokes .... and often at my expense! Having known Barry many years prior to him meeting Chris, I can say without hesitation Barry had met and married his soulmate. As his friend, I was extremely happy to see him so very happy and so very content with his life.
There are so many reasons why I am going to miss Barry. He was always a very level-headed, solid person you could trust unconditionally. I always felt I could go to him for some level-headed advice. Yes, we had a lot of crazy times, and yet it's his warmth and humor and generosity of spirit that I will remember the most. I was so deeply saddened to hear of Barry's passing and feel so blessed that I had the opportunity in my life to know him and call Barry my friend.
