Martin Black Obituary

Martin V. Black, Jr., 78, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2021 in his home with his loving wife of 61 years, Kay Black. Known by many as "Poppy," his children and grandchildren had the opportunity to share tender moments with him before the Lord called him home.

Martin was a kind, patient and gentle patriarch of his family. He was a faithful friend to all and a man of high integrity that relied on a strong ethical compass and devotion to Jesus Christ. He was a good father who always took care of his children and did his best to teach, guide and serve them, and his adored grandchildren. He also extended these qualities to many of his children's and grandchildren's friends over many decades.

With a sly wit and a great sense of humor and humility, he often generated laughs, and tears, with countless funny mishaps and stories. His tender heart and kind words created timeless memories and stories that will live on with our family and friends forever.

Martin was born on April 2, 1942 in Houston, TX. At the tender age of 17, he married his Bellaire High School sweetheart Kay Black on February 23, 1960 and raised a family of four children. Martin's work ethic was uncompromising, beginning at the age of 12. Known for his tireless work ethic, he became a landman in the oil and gas business and was a proud member of the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL). During his professional landman career, he worked at Tidewater Energy, Santa Fe Energy, Eni, Castex Energy among other energy companies.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kay Black of Conroe, Texas; children Kathy Pennington, Steve Black and Cordelia Hernandez, Wendy Black and Rick Potts and Rick and Jill Black; as well as his five grandsons, Robert and Katye Black, Chris Pennington, Michael and Stephanie Pennington, Jake and Duke Black; one great grandson Dean Vincent Black; and other beloved friends, relatives and extended family.

Martin was a true gentleman and great Landman. I did my first deal with him in 1980 on a south Louisiana prospect. He was a man who was humble, honest, a hard worker and always had time to see how I was doing. They don’t make many good men like Martin. A true friend. He will be missed.

To Kay and the family;
Martin was a good friend with whom I shared many good times and business relationships over the past +-50 years. Knowledgeable, honest, fair and reliable, he was very well respected in the energy industry. Please accept my sincere condolences.

For 50+ years, through thick and thin , Mr. Black was always a wonderful friend to my family. I have many fond memories of Mr. Black from my youth and beyond. When our Dad passed, Mr. Black stepped in and helped where he could. I especially remember a hunting trip he took us on, that first fall after our Dad passed.

Good man gone, may you rest in peace fine sir.
