Manuel Delcharco Obituary

DELCHARCO, MD,
MANUEL F., 85
August 6, 1929 -
October 19, 2014
Manuel F Delcharco MD passed away Sunday, October 19 at home in Jacksonville Florida surrounded by his wife and family. Dr. Delcharco was born in Granada, Spain where he was educated by the Jesuits. He was on track to enter the priesthood but then attended medical school and became a physician following in the footsteps of his father and older brother.
His new life in the United States began when he answered an advertisement in a medical Journal for doctors needed in Chicago. There he met his wife of 52 years, Geraldine 'Geri' Papini. They moved to Ocala, Florida in the early 1970's where they raised their four children Dr. Manuel 'Manny' DelCharco Jr., Antoinette 'Toni' Ponce, Michael DelCharco and Dr. John DelCharco.
Dr. DelCharco's interests were intellectually inclined with a love of philosophy, literature and classical music. He was an accomplished chess champion and could be found at home spending hours playing against a chess computer. Acquiring knowledge was easy for him and is what led him to be board certified in three specialties; anatomic pathology, nuclear medicine and family medicine. However, his true love was taking care of patients as a family doctor and he would make house calls for those too sick to come to his office.
He helped start one of the first charity medical clinics in Ocala and he went as far as Thailand to perform medical missionary work. Even after being retired for many years his former patients seek him out and relate stories of his caring nature.
He enjoyed being surrounded by his family and was proud of their accomplishments. He was especially appreciative of his wife, Geri, who was always at his side and comforting during the difficult last years of his life.
His 12 grandchildren include Ava and Max DelCharco of Ocala. Kristine, Catherine, and Joseph Ponce of Jacksonville, Thomas, Timothy, and Anna DelCharco also of Jacksonville and Cole, Madeline, Chase, and Sawyer DelCharco of Hickory, North Carolina.
He is survived by his sister Gloria Escobar of Malaga, Spain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Fernando and Mrs Antonia DelCharco, brother, Dr. Fernando DelCharco, and his sister, Mari Cruz Sanchez.
A Mass will be held October 25th at 11:00am in Jacksonville, Florida at San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church, 1718 State Road 13, St. Johns, FL 32259.
In lieu of flowers Dr. DelCharco would have preferred donations to The Path of Citrus and Marion County. 21 S. Melbourne St, Beverly Hills, FL 34465

To Dr. Manuel "Manny" DelCharco Jr., his family and the entire DelCharco family: My deepest sympathy in your loss and the passing of your loved one, Dr. Manuel DelCharco. I see that he was a humanitarian in starting a clinic for the needy in Ocala and memorial donations to be made to Path. Following in his footsteps, his work lives on as Dr. DelCharco, Jr. kindly works with me on my bill. Sincerely, Deborah Barnes, patient of Dr. Manuel Delcharco, Jr.

Prayers for the family. I can confirm he was a great chess player. He beat me many times at the Ocala Chess Club in the 1970s. He was a very classy man and I always enjoyed talking to him. He will be missed

Dearest Geri and children,
As you no doubt guessed I am heartbroken to hear of your loss our precious Dr Del Charco. He was the employer of a lifetime and my life is so full being privileged to have worked with him for 18 very short years. He was my inspiration to become a teacher since he retired, breaking the mold of a humanitarian physian whose joy was giving to all in need. Many of his patients today complain of being unable to find anyone so compassionate and caring as he was.
This must be such a huge dark feeling not listening to his music which he loved so much! I pray the comfort of the Holy Spirit will encase you with His love and that you may rejoice in the knowledge of Manuel's great love for his Lord.
Love to you all
