CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Donald Robert Burrowbridge Sr., 86, passed away peacefully June 14, 2006.
He was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Madison, Wis., to Clarence and Ruth Burrow-bridge. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a major in the European Theater, and retired with 30 years of service in 1972 as a reserve-duty colonel in the infantry. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with B.S. in agricultural engineering and earned a master's degree in agricultural economics from Virginia Tech in 1965. He worked 26 years in cooperative education at Virginia Tech, University of Akron, and the University of South Florida until his retirement in 1988 to Sun City Center, Fla. He has enjoyed his family and life to the fullest. He enjoyed riding, raising and showing horses, and was an avid golfer.
Don was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Marion (Ryan), in 1991. He is survived by children, Donald Jr. (Sue) of Annapolis, Md., James (Carol) of Birmingham, Ala., William (Virginia) of Charlottesville, Jeanne (George) Wilson of Columbus, Ohio, Lynn (late George) Mason of Farnham, Va., Stephen (Debby) of Massillon, Ohio, and Carole Burrowbridge of Lizella, Ga. Don is also survived by 17 grandchildren, James and Missy Burrowbridge of Locust Grove, Ga., Greg and Christi Orvis of Pacifica, Calif., Jory and Marlena Heindel of Alabaster, Ala., Chris and Erin Leonard of Newport News, Va., Payton and Stacy Bullock of Puryear, Tenn., Kevin Burrowbridge of Fulton, Ma., Scot and Sarah Casto of Vienna, Va., Ryan Burrowbridge of Ocean Beach, Calif., Adam Burrowbridge of Washington, D.C., Charles and Amanda Wilson of Columbus, Ohio, Chris and Sara Wilson of Columbus, Ohio, Sh'ani Mason of Farmville, Va., Darian Mason of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mike and Heather Mahoney of Gilbert, Ariz., Matt and Megan Donaldson of North Canton, Ohio, Brock and Rachel Bixler of Mansfield, Ohio, and Nils Tracy of Dayton, Ohio; 14 great-grandchildren; his brother, Allen and Jan Burrowbridge; as well as many nieces, nephews, relations, and friends.
Don was a son, brother, husband, father, soldier, educator, coach, grandfather, great- grandfather, friend, gentleman, mentor, and lover-of-life. He will forever be missed but never forgotten. Don spent his last five years in Charlottesville.
A memorial service will be held in Charlottesville at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2006, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home. A memorial service and interment will be held, reuniting Don with his wife, at Arlington National Cemetery, at a future date.
The family thanks the staff of Rosewood Village for the loving care and attention provided to Don and his family.
