Felix Catlin Obituary

Felix Anthony Catlin II

Felix Anthony Catlin passed away on January 14, 2005.

Born Sept. 27, 1923 in Scienceville, Ohio, Train Stop 19, near Youngstown. Preceded in death by parents Felix C. D'Alessio, and Clara (nee Swa neck), his wife Betty, and most recently, his cousin Carmen DiSalvo. Survived by daughters, Elaine (Bud) Carey, Ellen Stacia Catlin, son Felix III "Tony", brother Wallace Adrian D'Ales sio, grandchildren, Bud Carey Jr. (Laura), Timothy Carey (Kelly), Andrew Carey (Alana) and seven great-grandchildren.

Felix graduated from South High School in 1942. During WWII, he served in Europe as a forward observer and gunner in General Patton's Army, 89th Div., 341 Field Artillery Battalion, Battery C. He attended col lege at Oregon State U and graduated from Akron U in 1950 with a Civil Engineering degree. Felix worked at Narzisi Const., before forming Catlin-Boarman Const., then Catlin Concrete Const., a union shop. He was a board member of the Builder's Exchange and Akron Area Concrete Contractors Assn., also serving as President.

Felix enjoyed teaching. He was active in local union apprentice programs, and taught mathematics and blueprint reading at Hower Trade School. After retiring, he was a substi tute teacher in the Akron, Barberton, and Copley-Fairlawn School Districts and taught many children "I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree" (Joyce Kilmer).Felix had many hobbies. He was a SCCA competition sports car driver. He enjoyed drawing and oil painting, and was a shrewd and charming card player. His favorite pastime was fishing, or dreaming of fishing, from the pier in Venice, Florida. Well-read in history, he was most intrigued by ancient history and Immanuel Velikovsky. Felix was a unique, fun loving character with many stories to share. He was honest, generous, a smart aleck, old-fashioned and a good father. In lieu of flowers, Felix would suggest you buy a lottery ticket.

Cremation has taken place. Calling hours at Billow Fairlawn Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Tuesday 1/18 from 4-7 PM. The family will welcome friends at the house (2886 Vesper Dr., Fairlawn) on Wednesday 1/19 from 12-5 PM. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 330-867-4141)

I will miss Felix. Felix was a little bit hard to get to know, mainly because half of the time he was pulling my leg. In addition to sharing his sense of humor he shared some incredible experiences with me, as well as his profound interest in the world and it's history. It was always a pleasure to discuss the world with Felix. I was privileged to have had the chance to get to know him.
