Alexander Millar Obituary
Alexander (Al) Millar III, was born on February 19th, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois to Elsie and Alexander Millar II. He and his first wife, Kathryn Bina Millar, came to Edmond in 1948. Kathryn died in 1990 after 53 years of marriage. Al and Ella Mae were married in September 1991 and lived at Teal Ridge in Edmond. Al served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He secured a civil service appointment at Tinker Air Force Base as a high rated specialist in the Industrial Engineering Department, where he received a number of 'Outstanding Performance' awards. He and his wife, Kathryn, were co-owners of the Al Millar Real Estate Company in Edmond. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Edmond since 1948. He was also a member of The Service Sunday School Class, Men's Fellowship, served as a deacon, and many other positions. He was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party. He served as president of the Edmond Recreational Council. He was a real-estate broker and served two consecutive years as president of the Edmond Board of Realtors; he taught class in real estate ethics and represented many of the landowners in the Lake Arcadia project. Al belonged to the American Legion, the Tuesday night men's bridge club, the YMCA, served Meals on Wheels, and rode on a bicycle team, The South Chicago Wheelman's Club, and was a member of the Double D Bridge Club. He was the unofficial Santa Claus of Edmond in the 1950's and 60's, going door to door visiting the children in their homes. Al did extensive studies on the American Presidents, the Vatican, and Vatican art. He learned to play the organ at age 70. Al and Ella Mae traveled the United States extensively, visiting all of the Presidential Libraries and toured Israel. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Ella Mae Millar, one daughter, Donna Millar Swartzbaugh of Oklahoma City, one son, Alex (Buzz) Millar of Edmond, four stepchildren, seven grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and Brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Edmond with burial following in Gracelawn Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Matthews Funeral Home of Edmond.
