Jack Sisson Obituary

Jack Ulness Sisson was born in Cloverdale, Indiana, on May 30, 1922, to Sivert Ulness Sisson and Maud Ethel Young Sisson, and was one of eight children. He grew up on a farm near Cleves, Ohio, where he rode his pony often. After a prolonged illness, Jack left us on December 4, 2010, to be with God, our Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ. Growing up, the Sisson home in Ohio was filled with music and poetry. The girls played the piano, and the boys played woodwind instruments. Jack fondly recalled receiving three dollars for playing his saxophone and clarinet with a band when he was 15 years old. This was the beginning of a lifelong musically-oriented career, during which he played with several bands of the "Big Bands" forties style. He continued to perform professionally until 2000. Jack graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and then from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music with a master of Music Education degree in 1950. He married Dorothy Helen Hager in 1948, and they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, in 1950. There he began his teaching career at the Edmond Public Schools, starting with band students of fifth grade level through high school. In 1956 Jack left the Edmond Public Schools to become band director for Central State College (now University of Central Oklahoma). In 1969 he was elevated to Music Department chairman and served in that position until 1979. He continued as a woodwind instructor until his retirement in 1984. Jack received a Doctor of Music Education degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1969. He was a member of the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association, the Oklahoma Music Education Association, Phi Beta Mu music fraternity, Oklahoma Adjudicators. He was awarded the University of Central Oklahoma Band Director Emeritus Award. He was inducted into the OBA Hall of Fame and the OMEA Hall of Fame. After his retirement, Dr. Sisson returned to his childhood dream of owning and raising horses on his farm east of Edmond. Jack is survived by his wife, Dorothy Helen Hager Sisson; and two children: Linda Beth Sisson Fieth and Byron David Sisson and his wife, LeAnna. His grandchildren are: Cory Punto and her husband Russell, Seth Fieth, Dylan Fieth, Elizabeth Sisson, Megan Sisson, Emma Sisson, Lance Sisson, and great-grandson, Jack Punto. He is also survived by his sisters: Gene Reed of Vermont, Nancy Campton and her husband Ron of Florida; and by two brothers: Ray and wife Peggy of Ohio, and Max Sisson of South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond on December 7th and 8th from 8am to 9pm. The Funeral Service will be held at First Christian Church of Edmond, Oklahoma, on December 9th at 10am. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to accept donations to establish a Jack Sisson music scholarship through the music department at the University of Central Oklahoma. Services under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home Edmond, OK.

Dr. Sisson (at that time he was Mr. Sisson, no PHD in music yet) entered into my life in the fall of 1953 when the 4th grade class of Ida Freeman School, Edmond, OK. began beginners band under Dr. Sisson's direction. We began with $1.00 tonetts, now called recorders. Those whose parents could buy instruments continued with private instruments (no school instruments were provided back in the day.) My lessons on the B flat clarinet continued until I had finished the 6th grade. At that time Dr. Sisson left the Edmond Public School System for Central State College (now University of Central Okla.) I continued in the Edmond Band playing the clarinet, E flat Alto sax and the Baritone sax until my graduation in 1962 under the directin of Charles Robinson, but it was the foundation that Dr. Sisson provided that allowed my progress.

In the 1970's my daughter took lessons from Dr. Sisson while at University of Central Okla.

Only former students will ever know how much each student meant to Dr. Sisson.

It was a "bragging right" to let people know that our band director, Mr. Sisson, had been with the Dezzi Arnezz's (Ricky of "I Love Lucy")Band.

May God's Tender Mercy comfort the family and close friends of Dr. Sisson. Dr. Sisson was one of a kind.

Thanks for my love of music Dr. Sisson, Wanda Rae Kellner - Smith - McCreary

I remember Dr Sisson as a kind and patient teacher as well. I have fond memories of my clarinet lessons in 1978-79. He was always so witty and had the sparkliest eyes.

Jack Sisson was an inspiration to so many, whether they studied with him or had the priviledge to perform with him or were involved in musical conversation. I first remember asking him upon advice of music educators to do a clinic for my concert band at Blackwell, Oklahoma around 1964. He was phenomenal and from that time on, I tried to associate with him when possible. He made a huge impact with educators in our state and region. A class guy in every way. In my years of teaching, if I needed to hire a good teacher, you could count on them if they had been around Jack Sisson. I know his family is proud of his work and have been blessed to have him for such a long time. Each of us need to work harder to emulate and use his methods to make this a better world. I experienced Dr Sisson as a beginning clarinet student at Russell Dougherty from 1953-1956 and as a scholarship bass clarinet student at Central State from 1960-1961. He was a great teacher in a positive inspirational way. Although my life did not continue in music, Dr Sisson's influence on work ethic and attention to detail became valuable assets. I am truly honored to have known him and saddened by his passing.

With deepest sympathy,

I was a 4th grade student at Ida Freeman Grade School 1954-1955, when I had my first music lesson from Mr. Sisson. What a kind patient teacher.

Jerry and I are thankful for the opportunity of having such a fine educator as Dr. Sisson be a part of our life. As a teacher, friend, boss, fellow musician, etc. he influenced a lot of people's lives. I have fond memories of working for him in the music office as a student secretary, when he was Chairman of the Music ...Dept...He was a lot of fun to be around...He was a serious musician, a excellent band director/teacher. Dr. Sisson you will live on in every life you touched.

I was a music major at UCO from 1972-1976. I took clarinet lessons from Dr. Sisson. He pushed me to do more than I knew I could do. Excellence was prime when you took lessons from him.

I am sad to learn from a friend today of Dr. Sisson's death. He was a great guy!!. He had that sparkle in his eye and a wonderful smile. I also remember how serious he could get and how he'd set that jaw to be even more stern. He taught us that look because he said we'd need it when we became band directors!

I loved him and his sense of humor.

Dr. Sisson's family will be in my thoughts and prayers as they walk this season of grief.

Loving, caring, praying,
Janet

He was my neighbor, from the time I was 4 til I was 13, he was the sweetest. He taught me how to feed his horses and play a few songs on the piano. I will always remember him.
