Maurice Garrison Obituary

Oklahoma City funeral home founder, Maurice Garrison, died Thursday night, November 16, 2006 in Lindale, TX, where he had moved earlier this year to be near his family. He slipped away peacefully after a short bout with pneumonia with his loved ones at his side. Services will be 10:00 am Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at Smith & Kernke Chapel, 14624 N. May Ave, Oklahoma City with the interment at Memorial Park Cemetery. He was the son of Jessie Leah (White) and George Edgar Garrison and one brother Cecil R. Garrison who died in 1971. Mr. Garrison was born in McCune, KA in 1909 and came to Oklahoma City in 1923 with his family and opened Garrison Funeral Home at 11th and N. Walker. He operated the business until retirement in 1978. The Garrison Funeral Home building has been preserved by the Oklahoma Historical Society and now serves three legal offices and a restaurant. Maurice attended school in Blackwell and Alva, Central High School, OK City, graduated from OU with an Associate Degree and received his degree in Funeral Service at Hohenschuh-Carpenter College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis in 1932. Maurice was active in Amity Lodge #473, Oklahoma Consistory at Guthrie, India Shrine Temple, Cadillac Patrol of India Temple, Royal Order of Jesters, Junior and Senior Chambers of Commerce, Young Men's Dinner Club, Men's Dinner Club, Civitan Club, DOOK, Sooner Dinner Club, OK Funeral Directors' Assn., National Funeral Directors Assn., the Young Men's Club, Phi Beta Chi Social Fraternity, Delta Pi Professional Fraternity and United Methodist Church of the Servant. His wife, Mary Elizabeth and daughters, Donna Kay and Mary Jane (Pat) Brassfield preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Lynda, son-in-law, Max Simms of Hideaway, TX; granddaughter, Donna Weaver and husband Alan of Wellington, FL, Paula Brassfield, OK City; grandson, Tracy Simms and wife Amy, Houston, great-grandsons, Jerry Weaver, MA, Tim Weaver, Australia, Warren Brassfield, OK City, and great-granddaughters Megan Simms, Houston and Alisa Weaver, Atlanta, and niece Joann Brown, AR. Memorials may be made to Shrine Children's Burn Center, Galveston, TX unit or Church of the Servant. SMITH & KERNKE 14624 N. MAY AVE

It was my pleasure to be an employee of the Garrison Funeral Home during 1947-1948. Maurice was a true gentleman and a professional
in every respect, just a wonderful person. This rememberance includes his Mother, brother Cecil, Nephew Jack, Niece Joanne, his wife and daughters, all were truly true friends.
