Chris Saklar Obituary

Saklar, Chris M.

January 25, 1931 - September 29, 2020

Chris was so very proud of his Greek Heritage, his South Omaha roots (a true "SOB" – South Omaha Boy), University of Nebraska football player 1950 – 51, US Army Korean War Veteran, member of the Douglas County Sheriff Department, his Greek Orthodox Faith, and especially his family and close friends. He will be remembered for his distinct voice, kind heart, infectious smile, and the twinkle in his eye – once you met him, you became an instant friend.

Chris was a longtime entertainer since his early teens playing with various bands including Ta' Zorbas, Larry Gomez and Brotherhood, and Chris Saklar and the Coalition. He most recently performed along with several karaoke singers at local Legion Posts, assisted living facilities, and for various fundraisers. The highlight of his week was singing every Friday and Saturday night with his Millard VFW family where he specialized in the songs of Frank Sinatra, earning him the name "Rat Pack Sak".

He was a devoted 32-year Douglas County Deputy Sheriff working patrol, then with Crime Prevention, Neighborhood Watch, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and initiating the D.A.R.E. Program in area elementary schools. Later he worked with the Jimmy Wilson Jr. Foundation raising funds for law enforcement.

Chris was a radio personality on the "Morning Breakfast Flakes Show" on Sweet 98FM, giving local radar locations, traffic reports, and saluting chosen Omahans and local students as "Neat Sweet 98ers".

Memberships include the Millard American Legion Post #374, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #2, Omaha South High School Hall of Fame, and Charter Member of All Holy Spirit Greek Orthodox Church.

Preceded in death by his wife, Nadine; brothers, Stanley, George, and baby George; sister, Katherine Green. Survived by daughters, Tracey Saklar and fiancé James Holzer, Kris and husband Dan Placzek; grandchildren, Jake, Olivia and Eden Placzek; several loving nieces, nephews, and many cherished friends and neighbors.

A Private Family Trisagion (Greek Orthodox Prayer Service) will be held Sunday. PUBLIC VISITATION will take place Sunday, October 4th, 2–6pm at the Funeral Home. Private Family Funeral Service followed by interment at Omaha National Cemetery. To view a live broadcast of the interment service Monday, October 5th at 2pm, go to the obituary at www.klsfuneral home.com and click on the "Stream Funeral Service" option. Memorials are requested to All Holy Spirit Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund.

Chris was my coworker at the sheriff´s department and my friend. I was friends with his wife Nadine at the sheriff´s department and thought she and Chris were perfect for either! Chris never met a stranger and was everyone´s friends. His laugh and smile were infectious!! He loved vacationing in Hawaii and was responsible for the best vacation I ever had (to Hawaii) by calling his friends there to make sure my wife and I had a great time. That´s who Chris was, someone who cared deeply for others and wanted to help everyone he could. I just saw this and wanted to add my voice to those thanking Chris for his friendship and love for his fellow man. I love you Brother and your family was blessed to have you in their lives! God speed My Friend!

I first met Chris in high school and he was always fun to be around. I remember on Senior Bums Day he was all dressed up like the perfect bum. It was riot. We worked together at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, and most recently, I enjoyed listening to him sing his favorite songs of Frank Sinatra at both the Millard VFW and American Legion Post 1. He was always upbeat and a pleasure to be around. He will be missed by all who knew him. My deepest sympathy goes to his very special family.

I remember Chris from when he worked for the D.C. Sheriff's Dept. When my father retired from the Sheriff's Dept. Chris could not attend his retirement party at Anthony's. But he found a way to be there with a surprise note congratulating him on his retirement. "He was one of a kind"
he will be missed. So sorry for his families and friends loss. He was a special person in life. May God Bless

A great many years ago, as a high school dolt... I got into some minor trouble that could have been very dangerous. Officer Saklar was my main contact after we were apprehended. My father came to get me and from the look on his face, Officer Saklar got up and stopped him. whoa... you got a good kid here. But he needs some new friends. I never forgot how well he treated me. Years later, I was managing partner at Grandmothers Restaurant in Ralston. Officer Saklar was with a group in the lounge and I went To say hello. I asked if he remembered the incident. You bet I do! You don't know how lucky you were! I was in a car reported stolen (by a parent) and the driver ran from the police.. Like a mad man. He lost control of the car and it was headed for officers who had gotten out of their vehicle. Several shots were fired into our car. Amazingly no one was hurt. Officer Chris said the way the guy was driving, they didn't know if we had just robbed a bank or killed someone! We were lucky and lucky that a patrolman was not hurt. At any rate.. I will always remember his professionalism, kindness and smile. A great great man.. my sincere condolences.

I loved the singing video on Facebook! What a guy! You were blessed to have him in your life! And he was blessed by his wonderful family and friends!

God Bless!
