Howard Kaiman Obituary

Kaiman, Howard Allan

October 31, 1929 - April 11, 2023

Howard Allan Kaiman, an esteemed attorney from Omaha and dedicated member of the Jewish community, passed away on April 11, 2023, at the age of 93 due to natural causes. Born in Omaha on October 31, 1929, Kaiman grew up up in a close-knit Jewish family with a strong emphasis on Jewish education. He attended Henry W. Yates Elementary, Central High School, and the Municipal University of Omaha, where he received a combined degree in Sociology and Secondary Education. He also earned a Teaching Certificate and taught for a while but felt something missing. Like his father, Samuel Kaiman, he attended night school at Creighton University School of Law where he graduated in 1967. He quickly established himself as a highly respected attorney, specializing in corporate law, estate planning, tax law, and personal injury. His work took him to the highest levels of the profession including appearances before the Nebraska Supreme Court.

Kaiman was a committed member of the Omaha Jewish community, and he was active in many organizations dedicated to promoting Jewish culture and education. In an article written in the Jewish Press on May 7, 1999, Kaiman is quoted, "We know the beauty of Judaism. It makes the ordinary extra-ordinary." He was a regular attendee at Temple Israel, where he served on the Board and was involved in numerous events and programs. He was also a member of the Board of the Jewish Federation of Omaha and worked closely with local Jewish schools to provide mentorship and guidance to young students interested in pursuing careers in law. Throughout his career, Kaiman was recognized for his expertise, professionalism, and commitment to his clients. He was highly respected by his colleagues in the legal community who valued his thorough research and attention to detail.

Kaiman was preceded by parents, Samuel Kaiman and Ida Sidman Kaiman; brother, Ernie and love of his life Mary Jane Lightner. He is survived by Donna Kaiman Gilbert and nephews and nieces Samuel, Jerry, David, Daniel, Stacey and Julie, of many whom he changed the course their lives and treated them like they were his own children.

His passing is mourned by his family, friends, colleagues, and the wider Omaha community.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: Friday, April 14, 12pm, at Beth El Cemetery, 84th and L Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Beth El Synagogue in Kaiman's memory.

mr. kaiman was a giant in the law, and as a person. when i was a baby lawyer, and didn't know much about the law or how to practice it, he on a couple of occasions, went out of his way to provide guidance - which was appreciated. he, along with many others, were good examples of how we can be on opposite sides yet still be civil, even friendly - good lessons to learn. if he treated me, a stranger basically, well, i can only imagine what a wonderful family man he must have been.

To The Kaiman Family

I met Mr. Kaiman through our mutual friend Ed Hasenjager when I was Ed's secretary back in the 80's. Howard was a very close friend to Eddie and I grew to love him too. I really hadn't seen Mr. Kaiman much since then, but Ed would always talk about him to me. Mr. Kaiman was very kind and very good at his profession. I loved and respected him very much. He is now with Eddie and at rest. He will be missed. His family was blessed to have him so long in their lives.
My love and healing to the family .

I have fond memories as a young lawyer in the 1980s drinking coffee and listening while Howard and the other prominent lawyers shared stories at Northrop Jones. His humor and interest in other people was notable. Many of the older lawyers were quite the characters back then, and Howard was always able to bring out the best part of the stories with his comments and smile. Those were the days my friend, and it was wonderful to share that era with you.

I met Howard 2 years ago. He was part of a widow/widower group of friends that met at Runza and Bagel Bin weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays. Howard was a kind, compassionate, gentle soul and was loved by all that were fortunate enough to know him. He was fun and witty and kept our conversations very interesting. He was very knowledgeable on many subjects. It was a pleasure spending time with Howard and he will be greatly missed by our little group. Rest in peace my friend.
