Not sure what to say?

August 11, 2009

To King Family:
I was so sorry to hear of your father's death. It is as if a generation of the black community died within a two month period and along with that some of our childhood memories. We had lots of fun running in/out of each others homes on Wirt Street. Be comforted by your memories.

FATHER, GRANDFATHER, GREAT GRANDFATHER, FRIEND. ANYONE WHO HAS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET “LARRY” CAN CLAIM HIM AS ONE OF THE ABOVE.

WHILE IT SEEMS SELFISH TO SAY HIS TIME WAS TOO SHORT ON THIS EARTH, I FEEL I NEED ANOTHER 88 YEARS WITH HIM.
THEN I BEGAN TO REFLECT ON ALL THE MEMORIES I HAD WITH MY GRANDFATHER AND DECIDED HOW FORTUNATE I AM TO HAVE SPENT THESE LAST 39 YEARS WITH HIM.

IT WASN’T JUST 39 YEARS. THESE 39 YEARS WERE FILLED WITH WONDERFUL MEMORIES AND TRAVELS. I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TO HALF OF THE PLACES I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO TRAVEL TO IF IT HADN’T BEEN FOR MY GRANDFATHER.

I REMEMBER GROWING UP AND THINKING HOW IMPORTANT MY GRANDFATHER WAS TO OUR FAMILY AND THE COMMUNITY. HE HAD A GREAT CAREER WITH SWIFT COMPANIES AND EVEN IN RETIREMENT WORKED AT CON AGRA. HE ENJOYED HIS LIFE AND HIS HOME WAS FILLED WITH FRIENDS AND FUN. HIS GRANDCHILDREN ALWAYS REAPED THE REWARDS OF ALL HIS SUCCESS.

MY GRANDFATHER MADE SURE HIS FAMILY WAS TAKEN CARE OF AND WANTED FOR NOTHING. WE COULD ALWAYS HAVE FRIENDS OVER HIS HOUSE AND WE WOULD BRAG ABOUT ALL THE THINGS WE HELPED HIM BUILD LIKE THE THREE DECKS OR THE MAINTENANCE SHED, I WAS EVEN THERE WHEN HE BUILT THE SCREENED IN PORCH OFF THE KITCHEN AND I THOUGHT HOW IS THIS GOING TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE WE GO TO BED? I WAS ACTUALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SLEEPING OUTSIDE ON THE INCOMPLETE PORCH BUT HE FINISHED IT BEFORE WE WENT TO BED. OF COURSE!

MOST OF MY LIFE MY GRANDFATHER BARTENDED TO MAKE EXTRA MONEY. I HAVE ONE OF HIS OLD BUSINESS CARDS. TO EXPLAIN HOW OLD IT IS THE NUMBER TO CALL WAS
PL 6171. WOW! HE CHARGED $2.50 AN HOUR. MY GRANDFATHER HAS SEEN A LOT OVER THE YEARS. HE TOLD US HE WOULD SEE A MOVIE FOR .10 CENTS. OF COURSE HE HAD TO SIT IN THE BALCONY.

I KNOW HOW FORTUNATE I WAS TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SHARE IN MY GRANDFATHER’S LIFE. ME ALONG WITH HIS KIDS, GRANDKIDS, GREAT GRANDKIDS, AND NUMEROUS FRIENDS. BUT I ALSO KNOW HOW FORTUNATE HE WAS TO HAVE BEEN BORN IN 1921 AND LIVE TO SEE THE WORLD CHANGE SO MUCH AND EVEN BE PRESENT TO SEE THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN ELECETED AS PRESIDENT.

I’M SAD I DO NOT HAVE MY GRANDFATHER TO TALK TO ANY LONGER, BUT MORE IMPORTANT, I FEEL FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD HIM IN MY LIFE.
HE HAS TAUGHT ME TO BE A HARD WORKER, NEVER LET ANYONE TELL ME I CAN’T ACCOMPLISH WHAT I WANT, BREAK BARRIERS AND TO BE A TRUE FRIEND LIKE HE WAS TO ALL WHO KNEW HIM.
