Peter Brennan Obituary

Brennan, Peter "Mal"

November 8, 1931 - October 2, 2023

Peter Malachy "Mal" Brennan was born on November 8, 1931, in Mullacurry, Ireland. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 2, 2023. He was preceded in death by parents, Peter and Bridget Brennan; beloved wife, Elizabeth (Halpenny) Brennan; grandsons, Ryan Jopp and Nathaniel Brennan; brothers, Paddy Byrne, Gerry, Mattie and Ollie Brennan; sisters, Bernadette Brennan, Bridget (Ciss) Larkin, Phyllis Hamill, Maura McGrory and Peggy Connolly. He is survived by his loving children, Jerry (Lori) Brennan, David (Mary) Brennan, Brigid (David) Jopp, June Fritz, Marion (Tom) LaMontia, Irene O'Keefe, Carmel (Tim) Conway, Angela (Kevin) Fee, Sheila (Rick) Johnson and Nora (Patrick) Spencer; his loving companion, Sharon Ursick; 25 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mairie Brennan; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Peter was known as "Mal" to all his family and friends in Ireland. He was the founder of Irish Music in Omaha and formed the band, The Turfmen, who played their wonderful Irish music for 30 years in The Dubliner and Brazenhead pubs.

He was a kind, loving and generous man, full of fun and laughter, with a lifetime of wonderful stories to tell us all about growing up in Ireland, and about emigrating from Ireland to Canada, and then to Omaha, and working so very hard to provide for his wife and 10 children. Peter was very proud of his family and loved us all so very much. He was dearly loved by all who knew him and even those who just met him.

No one he met was a stranger, just a friend he hadn't met yet.

Peter "Mal" Brennan will be forever missed by all of us. He lived his life to the fullest, squeezing out every last bit of time he could with those he loved. Our hearts are beyond broken but we are blessed to have had him in our lives. He is the best Father and Grandfather any of us could have asked for.

Rest in peace Daddy, we love you always. Your Accordion is quiet now but your music lives on forever in our hearts and in the loving memories of you.

I only just found out today (Oct. 26) that dear, wonderful Peter has passed away. So sorry to hear the news. My sympathies to all his family members.
Inch by inch and row by row Peter planted the seeds of friendship reaping a bountiful harvest wherever he went.
I will miss you my friend and all the good times we had at Tuesday night practices and the wonderful nights that just flew by playing at the Dubliner. See you again someday on Fiddler´s Green with our accordions in tow.
God bless you,
Diane O´Brien

Sad news travels slowly to Lincoln because I just learned today of Peter's passing.
What a gem. He taught generations of people to love Irish music.
I was blessed to be a member of the Turfmen for a few years, and always enjoyed playing with Pete.
Peace be with him and his family.

Sheila
You and your family are in our prayers. I didn't meet your dad in person, but his legacy certainly lives on in all of you. Blessings to all.

Love to all the Brennan family as I recall fond music-making times with Peter, and the many St. Patrick days with you all at the Brazen Head. God bless his soul and May he rest in the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When I was hired to teach at Cathedral, the first place all the coaches went was the Dubliner. Had Sheila and Angie in class many times. Remember some of the stories you used to share at parent teacher conferences. Always was impressed with the rich heritage of the Irish. May the wind always be upon your back......Much love and respect-Coach Kupfer

To Sharon and all Peter's family
Our family had the great pleasure of living across the back yard from Peter. He played his beautiful accordion on the deck, brought us tomatoes from his garden for many years, and was always ready for a friendly conversation to catch up! Peter will remain forever fondly in our memories and we were proud to have known him. May you rest in God's loving arms Peter. And may God surround all those who loved him with peace.

I met Peter through my sister, Joan, who loved him like family - which he was to many. He was a gentle soul with an unwavering faith. I wish I had the chance to know him better. Rest in Peace, Peter. I know without a doubt that you are in the presence of our Lord & those who have gone before you
