Raymond Beem Obituary

Beem, Raymond Marvin
Age 76 - Aug 8, 2011

Died Monday after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Ray was born in Omaha on October 11, 1934. He was the only child of the late Max and Marion Beem, also of Omaha. He graduated from the University of Omaha in 1956 and went to Naval Officer Candidate School, graduating as an Ensign. His active duty took him to Charleston, SC and Key West FL, where he served as an officer on a Destroyer Escort. He retired from active service in 1960 and returned to Omaha, where he had a long and successful career in the material handling business. He continued to serve his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve for over 20 years, retiring as a Captain. During his service in the USNR, he attended the National and Navy War Colleges and was appointed by Senator Ed Zorinski as a Blue and Gold officer, selecting worthy candidates for the Naval Academy and Navy ROTC. He moved to Charlotte in 1984 and grew to love the Carolinas. He is survived by his wife and companion of 52 years, Marilyn Irene Beem (nee Jones); his children Stephen Bruce Beem of Charlotte, Christopher Alan Beem of Whitefish Bay, WI, and Jennifer Jill Beem of Eagan, MN; daughter-in-law Patricia Connor Beem; and the apples of his eye, his three grandchildren, Rachel Connor Beem, Connor Samuel Beem and Samuel Aidan Beem, all of Whitefish Bay.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held Thursday, August 11th at 3:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 4519 Providence Road, with a reception to follow at the Church. Ray was never without a library book in his hand. Folks at his local branch knew him by name. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Ray Beem, to the Memorial Book Fund of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, 310 North Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28202. Memorials are also requested for the Christ Lutheran Church Building Fund, 4519 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226. Online condolences can be shared through Legacy.com.

Dear Marilyn, We just got your Christmas card & are so very sorry to learn about Ray. Ray had a great sense of humor and we are glad we stopped in to visit you in 2007. Last year Ray was kind enough to send me his Missouri Pacific Railroad lantern along with a wonderful story of his experiences which I will always cherish. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Dear Beem family, Even though I did not know you personally, I knew your parents very well as they walked by my work daily holding hands when they were still with us. As wonderful as they were, I can only imagine what a wonderful son they had and how much he will be missed. My sincere condolences.
