Josephine Cianfa Obituary
She was born on Aug. 7, 1917, in Hinckley, the daughter of Nicodemo "Nick" and Anna Mitchell Deppoliti.
Jo lived in Canastota almost all of her life, graduating from Canastota High School in 1936. She later graduated with a bachelor's degree from Cornell University.
She was a registered dietitian at the former Oneida City Hospital, retiring after 38 years.
Jo was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota, and its Altar Rosary Society and Parish Council.
She was, also, a member of Zonta International, the Oneida Hospital Auxiliary, Canastota-Lenox Sr. Citizens Club, Sr. Citizen Bowling League, and played golf in five different golf leagues, and had three holes in one.
Jo married Nello Cianfa on Sept. 10, 1949 in Monte San Giovanni, Province of Ricti, Italy. They later had a reception at St. Agatha's Church in Canastota.
Surviving are: a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and David Lofink of Carthage; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Cianfa of Caledonia, Ohio; four grandchildren, Jefferson Cianfa of Caledonia, Ohio, Lauren (Cianfa) Wetzel of Marion, Ohio, Alison Lofink of Carthage, and Wyatt Lofink, USN Seabees, Port Hueneme, Calif. Jo was predeceased by a son, John E. Cianfa, who died on Sept. 30, 2000; and two brothers, Albert Deppoliti, and Nello Deppoliti.
Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, at St. Agatha's Church, Canastota, where a funeral mass will be held. The Rev. Stephen P. Wirkes, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, from 2-5 p.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In her memory, contributions may be made to St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro St., Canastota, N.Y. 13032, or to the Opportunity Shop, 128 E. Center St., Canastota, N.Y. 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.

This is a little late but I just found out about your Moms passing in Oct. She was a wonderful lady and I recall sitting in your kitchen many years ago with your mom explaining about Italian food and serving us a snack! ... Barb, I was so sorry to hear of your Mom's death. She and my mother were such great friends and I can remember many wonderful visits with your family back when your Dad and grandparents were still alive. And of course, I always considered Johnny to be the younger brother that I never had because my mother took care of him when he was a toddler. I do hope your memories of your lovely mother will provide some comfort during this difficult time.

Dear Barbara: Your mother was one of my favorite people. The last time I saw her, a few months back, she was in Aldi's sitting on the countertop swinging her legs back and forth like a young girl while she waited for her young girlfriend Angie Argentine to cash out. That image of her perpetual youthful exuberance will forever be etched in my mind. She was always so kind to me...and such fun to know.

Barbara, your mother will be truly missed by many. She was a great help to Aunt Mary and many others when she was driving and lived in Canastota. Ron and I liked going to her house for dinners. May she rest in peace and God be with her.

Your mother was my mentor as I was training to be a Dietitian at Oneida City Hospital and Nursing Home. I was blessed to be able to work with her - she taught me to always give my best. My condolences for your loss.
