Dr. Thomas Monroe Henson II, 78, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018.

Born on November 2, 1940 in Wadley, GA, Dr. Henson was the son of the late Thomas Veal and Carolyn Bradley Henson. He attended the University of Georgia and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Emory University in 1964. Dr. Henson served in the United States Navy Dental Corps for two years after graduation and practiced dentistry in Athens from 1967 to 2017.

Dr. Henson was passionate about his life's work in dentistry. Governor Zell Miller placed him on the Georgia Board of Dentistry in 1994 in which he served five years. Dr. Henson was president of the Clarke County Dental Society for two years; served two terms with the Eastern District Dental Society and five years on the Georgia Board of Dental Examiners. He was a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry, Fellow of the Georgia Dental Association and Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, member of the Georgia Academy of Dental Practices and a graduate of the prestigious L. D. Pankey Institute.

Dr. Henson was an avid golfer and loved the Georgia Bulldogs. His four children and three grandchildren were the light of his life. His outstanding kindness and gentle nature made him an exceptional father and grandfather. Throughout his life, he emphasized humility and integrity, which, in addition to his wonderful sense of humor and optimism, made him beloved by his family, friends, and patients.

Dr. Henson was a devoted member of the Athens First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Tuck Class. Dr. Henson was also a member of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club of Athens, Touchdown Club of Athens, and Athens Country Club.

Dr. Henson is survived by daughters Julie Henson Evans, Dana Henson Buchanan and husband Reid, and Allie Henson; grandchildren, Parker Harrison Evans, Thomas Daniel Evans and Collins Reid Buchanan; sister, Dorothy Ann Henson Bachman and husband Richard L. of Gainesville; brothers, Dr. Daniel Mark Henson and wife Lynn of Gainesville and Dr. John Taylor Henson and wife Margaret of Gainesville; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son Jeffrey Taylor Henson and his brother Dr. Douglas Coile Henson Sr.

Funeral services will be held at the Athens First United Methodist Church on Friday, November 9th at 2pm. The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the John Wesley Parlor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Athens Nurses Clinic, 240 North Avenue, Athens, GA 30601.

Dr. Henson was my dentist from 1973 until he retired. I always looked forward to seeing him. He was always interested in my family, and he saw me from 7th grade all the way to being a grandmother. The last 30 years, I drove an hour and a half to see him because I just couldn't make myself go to any other dentist. I just learned of his passing, and I am heartbroken for all his family and friends. Please know that you will be in my prayers, and that Dr. Henson made a difference in my life. I will always think of him fondly.

My late husband was the only dentist he ever went to until he passed in 2011. He and his family thought a lot of Dr. Henson. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Tom Henson has been a very close friend of mine for 40 years and we played together as partners in many many golf tournaments.He was such a wonderful person with a wide warm smile and laughter that made everyone want to laugh.I will miss him terribly and will remember all the fantastic times we had together for the rest of my days.I will never stop loving you my dear friend .I offer my deepest heartfelt sympathy to all members of his family.
