Dylan Thomas' poem, “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” which we read together, urges us to live a strong life and not accept death calmly. While perhaps not apparent, I know those traits were the essence of your life for many years past. Death and disease sought to darken your life early, but you refused to submit, living your life as brightly as you could.

You saw death coming, you spoke of it often, and you were never afraid of it, but bravely defiant in its face. You would not let disease nor impending death change who you were, resolved that they not affect your capacity to love, care for, and help others. You continued to help those in need through your work as a nurse and medical case manager, and in your personal life, making people well, and dispensing medical advice and your life's deep wisdom. You posted a prayer every Sunday morning on Facebook, communicating your belief to loved ones and friends. The faith, compassion and warm heart that first led you to become a nurse saw you through to the end of your days.

You were furious at the disease for robbing you of a fuller life, and fought it to the end by retaining your keen wit and sense of humor, a zest for life, a positive and hopeful outlook, and an encouraging and generous nature. Though mentally tough, you never became embittered or hardened; the fundamental softness, sweetness and tenderness that were at your core never left you.

You fought with dignity and pride, telling no one the full extent of the devastating effects you endured, prevailing by never appearing fragile or less than remarkable. You were determined that it not affect your work, which gave so much meaning to your life, and that your friends and family not worry about you. That no one even began to understand the depth of your suffering is a clear sign of your victory.

I am so proud of your heroic ability to fight so strongly for so long in such a monumental struggle, and to live so gracefully under such extreme duress. What war lasts twenty years, the same soldier at the front? What rose in bloom was ever so lovely?

But the black universe seized you by the throat and shook you, and shook you. So alone in your fight, how could you withstand such merciless force? Finally, you could not. But because of the way you lived, because of your acts which still resonate so intensely, because of your fine qualities that made you such a shining light for so many of us, you showed us how to live, the mark of all great lives. For me, that is your legacy. I love you. Always have, always will…

It's been over 2 weeks now, and though my heart still hurts, and I miss your quips, quotes, jokes, notes, & prayers on Facebook, I take great comfort that you are breathing free and easy and flying with the angels. I hope my Ryan has found you by now and given you those hugs I asked him to give you. Lori, I know you never had kids of your own, but please know you are Ryan's honorary "Angel Mom", and hey, you can teach him how to play pool!! Next Sunday, Aug. 28th is his 21st birthday, so please take him out for a glass of beer or two to celebrate....but please make sure he flies safely home...LOL! Love & miss you!

I am at a loss for words, My heart goes out to family and friends. I went to school with Lori in 1974 and have thought about her often over the years. She had such a positive impact on my life When we were young. Last week I felt compelled to find her On Face book and reconnect but sadly It was too late for me to tell her she was, and always will be a part of my fondest memories.

Lori, you were a dynamite "Lady", a very special friend whom I only had the pleasure of knowing for a short while. But in that time you touched my life like no other one has; your continous support and unconditional love at a blink of an eye, always thinking of me and not putting yourself first with all the pain you experience with your illness. You always put a smile on my face with that special sense of humor you had! May you be at peace now and free of your pain. Until we meet again my dearest friend God Bless You, Love ya with Hugs & Kisses

Since The Loss Of You

Since the loss of you
I've learned to live for each day
And take it as a blessing
Knowing it may not always be this way.

Since the loss of you
I've learned that when everything goes wrong
To never give up on what is right
Because it can only make you strong.

Since the loss of you
I've learned that even when you're in a lot of pain
You've got to hold yourself together
So you won't feel like you're going insane.

Since the loss of you
I've learned how to hold the tears when I want to cry
Because all I have is memories
And just want to ask God why.

But mostly, since the loss of you
I've learned a life can be taken in the blink of an eye
And only Heaven really knows when
That person will have to say "Goodbye."

Rest in peace my sweet friend, I love and miss you dearly Lori...Big Hugs!!
