Thomas McCann
Loving husband, devoted father, and local businessman, Thomas James McCann Jr., passed from this life to his heavenly home on Monday, August 18, 2025 after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He was 91 years old.
Born in Midland on February 5, 1934 to Thomas J and Eleanor (Shaff) McCann, Tom was a life-long resident of Midland. He attended St. Bridgid School and graduated from Midland High School in 1952. He often recalled how he drove his father's dump truck to high school so that he could go to work after classes. Tom later attended the University of Detroit, leaving to return home to help with his family's business. His early work life included operating heavy machinery to dig the channels and piers for Mackinaw Island. He later worked for Dow Chemical Company where he was President of Union 12075 of the United Mine Workers. While President, he represented over 7,000 union employees and their families. He often remarked on his personal philosophy; "a fair day's work for a fair day's pay." After leaving Dow, he pursued his passion of real estate investment and development, owning many rental properties in the state of Michigan over 60 years.
Tom was a life long member of St. Bridgid of Kildare Catholic Church and a man of deep faith. Although he struggled for many years with chronic disease, whenever asked how he was feeling, his response was invariably "FANTASTIC". He was a spirited man and lived his life with enthusiasm and a sense of compassion for those in need.
Tom married Ida Voorhees in 1957. She predeceased him in June of 1971. He later married Alyne Hoggard, they recently celebrated 45 years of marriage. Tom is preceded in death by his father and mother, sisters; Mary Eileen McCann, Patricia McCann, and Loretta (Vernon) Phipps, and his brother Gordon McCann.
Tom is survived by his children, Eleanor (Thomas) Jansen, Thomas McCann III, Monte (Cynthia) McCann, and William (Jaime) McCann all of Midland, Stephanie (Michael Banks) McCann of Holt, and Nolan (Caitlin) McCann of Oakton, VA. Additionally, he is survived by his grandchildren, Caitlin (Samuel) Welsh, Wesley (Darlene) Rease, Erin McCann, Noah Banks, Beatrix McCann and Cillian McCann; as well as his great-granddaughter Abigail Welsh; sisters-in-law Beaulah McCann and Bonnie Voorhees; along with many cherished nieces, nephews and friends.
Those who knew Tom were aware of his failing health in recent years. His family wishes to thank long time friend Dr. John Vargas, Dr. Anita Techkandani, Dr. Travis Taylor, and the staff of MyMichigan Wound Treatment Center, and Dr. Mark Goethe for his unsurpassed orthopedic skills over many years. We also thank the staff of MyMichigan Medical Center - Midland Campus for their compassion and care, MyMichigan Palliative Care and Nurse Practitioner Ashley Satkoviak, and MyMichigan Hospice - especially Katie, Lynn, Gregg, and Mathew for their support in the last few months. Our deepest appreciation is extended to Father James Bessert, Father Patrick O'Connor, and Deacon Al Oliver for their faithfulness and friendship.
