Steve "Pops" Thompson, 73, of Paducah, passed away at 11:09 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, at Mercy Health - Lourdes Hospital.
Steve was born on Dec. 23, 1950, to Lourice Olsson Thompson and the late Rudell "Chaser" Thompson. Steve was a graduate of Paducah Tilghman High School and attended Southland Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War. In his early career he was an officer for the Paducah Police Department. In his later career, Steve was a member of Local #184 Plumbers and Steamfitters and taught for 10 years at the Vocational School. Steve would be called an aviation fanatic, as he owned & flew various aircrafts over the years. He was an avid Skydiver, with over 3500 logged jumps and was also a guest jumper with the 101 Airborne Division. He shared his love for the #99 Dirt Late Model Racing Team with all whom he met. Steve had a deep love for his family and maintained that love through the years.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Nancy Hayes Thompson; mother, Lourice Olsson Thompson; three sons, Max (Julie) Woods, Hickory, Dylan (Lauren) Thompson and Cody (Hayleigh) Thompson both of Paducah; one brother, Ronnie Thompson, LaCenter; four grandchildren, Courtney Woods, Jacob Woods, Taylor Woods, and Jett Thompson.
Preceding in death was his father, Rudell "Chaser" Thompson.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at the Lone Oak Chapel Milner & Orr Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Martin officiating. Burial will follow at the Smithland Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at the funeral home.
Expression of sympathy may be made to the McCracken County Humane Society, 4000 Coleman Road, Paducah, KY 42001; or the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis TN 38105.
