Charles Jernigan Obituary

Family-Placed Funeral Notice

CHARLES D. JERNIGAN Charles, age 72, dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away at St. Mary's Hospital Thursday, October 5, from complications following a fall in his home. He was born in Holley, Florida and had lived all of his adult life in Pahokee where he met and married his wife Carolyn Hickerson. Sunday, October 8, would have marked their 51st wedding anniversary. An avid outdoorsman, his love of nature and wildlife continued throughout his lifetime. He shared this passion with many as well as being a chartered leader of the Pahokee Wildlife Boys and assisting with scouting. As a longtime volunteer fireman of 22 years for the city of Pahokee, he will be remembered by many and missed dearly by his church family of the First United Methodist Church. To cherish his memory, he leaves his wife Carolyn; his three daughters, Lisa and her husband Terry Adams of Pahokee, Jennifer and her husband Josh Ewashko of Georgetown, Kentucky, and Erika and her husband Robert Demarest of Royal Palm Beach. He also leaves his seven precious grandchildren, Brent Adams and his wife Sylvia; Jack, Julianna and Josh Ewashko; Rachel, Amanda and Lauren Demarest; and his only great grandchild, Kain Adams. As well, he leaves his brother Mitchell Jernigan and his wife Carmen of Pensacola, his sisters Callie and her husband Cuelon Corbin of Chipley, Janice and her husband Harold Skens of Tampa, and Julie and her husband Greg Nightingale of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Finally he leaves his constant companion, his beloved dog Shiloh. The memory of his final years would not be complete without mentioning 3rd Floor West at Palm Beach Gardens Hospital. The nurses and staff made all of his stays over the years more bearable. With each arrival he was warmly greeted with “Hey, look who's here, it's Charles.” Most special to him was “his” cardiologist, Dr. Predrag Knez. He saw him through so many medical miracles over the years and was always there night or day, just a phone call away with help. He was truly blessed by this extraordinary physician, and his family will always remember his kindness. Also, the dedicated nurses and doctors of the ICU trauma unit at St. Mary's and Hospice of Palm Beach County who cared for him during his final days and treated his family with such compassion and kindness. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 9 from 6-8 PM at First United Methodist Church located at 491 East Main St. in Pahokee. Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, October 10 at 10 AM and will be lead by Pastor David Reeves. Burial will follow at Port Mayaca Cemetery. Dear Lisa and Family, So sorry for your loss. It is never easy to let a loved one go from our sight. I did not know your Dad but you are an example of the kind of person he must have been and that is very special. My thoughts and prayers go with you and your family in the weeks ahead. God Bless and strengthen each of you.

To our dear Carolyn, Lisa, Jennifer, and Ericka,
As one of "Charley's" most beloved supporters, cheerleaders, caregivers, and through the years friend, I will miss seeing his smiling face and hearing "theres my girls" comming down the hall on his way to 3 West, with that sweet southern charm. I have never met a more positive man with so much fight in his soul. Despite so many "near misses" as he would say, he never waivered from his great sense of humor and sunny disposition. To say in only a few words with great admiration, it was my extreme pleasure to be a fraction of this man's life. He could take a grueling day on 3 West and turn it right around for all of us. As soon as you saw him slowly making his way to the hallway, despite his enormous swelling and pain, there was that smiling face saying "hello darlin". It made all the stress and any possible self pity fall away by this inspiration of a man I had the pleasure of hugging and calling my friend hundreds of times. As a nurse, you love and care empathetically because you must to protect your inner self and be strong for the family. But, there are those few that break right through that protective shell and right into my inner heart of hearts. Charley was and is one of those special patients. Carolyn, you are one of the strongest women I know. Your love has been unwaivering through the years and you have always been there to fight for Charley when he was unable. What a beautful love story and example you set for your children and grandchildren. On behalf of myself and the "the girls" of 3West at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, we love and admire you and will always have a story to tell and an example to set by our Charley and his wonderful partner for life Carolyn. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always.
