Gene Greeter Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

GENE GREETER March 9, 1924 to March 5, 2012 Gene was born in Massillon, OH, the son of the late Elmira and Cletus (Tootie) Gruetter. He graduated from St. Mary's Elementary School and Massillon High. As a youth, he was deeply involved with the Boy Scouts and earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout. The highlight of his scouting career, however, was going to Washington D.C. for the Boy Scout Jamboree and having the honor of shaking hands with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. At eighteen years old, he entered the Army to serve in World War II in the Pacific Arena. Later, he served in the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart. After serving his country, Gene graduated from the University of Miami in 1952. He then moved to West Palm Beach where he owned several businesses. An avid sportsman, he loved fishing, tennis, golf, weight lifting, softball, and especially running. He was one of the founders of the Palm Beach Runners, and ran many, many marathons, including Boston, New York, Washington D.C., Paris, and Oslo. He also loved to travel and visited various countries on six continents. Gene is survived by his wife, Patricia L. Beggan; his sisters Margaret McKeen of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, and Marilyn Keifer of Massillon, OH; his nieces, Michelle Mustari Frank (Barry) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, and Victoria Mustari Donley (Bill) of Wetmore, CO; his nephew, Mark Johnson of Massillon, OH; and his beloved cats Shug, Prince, and Dork . A Committal Service will be held at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. In peace and in war, Gene was a hero to all fortunate enough to know him. His moral compass always pointed directly to the love of his fellow man. Somewhere along the rural roads of Heaven, Gene is running toward a cold keg of beer.

I will miss "Old Sarge"...he was a great pal & an excellent mentor for me for running & about the joys of living. I think of him everyday while doing the pushups that he would remind me to do whenever we spoke.

I only knew Gene through the running club but he was never without a smile and a kind word. We'll think of him dearly this weekend at his favorite old race the Shamrock. My thoughts go out to his family.
