George Greenberg Obituary

George Greenberg, "the mayor of Clematis Street" and owner of Pioneer Linens, the city's oldest business, died Thursday at his home from a brain tumor. He was 92.

Until the end, he went to work six days a week, actively managing business his father started in 1912 in Lake Worth and that he built into a multi-million dollar enterprise since it moved to 210 Clematis Street in 1930.

Mr. Greenberg often said he had no plans to retire.

"I certainly don't want to sit in a rocking chair," Greenberg, then 83, said in October 1998. "There's no two days that are the same. There's always problems, new challenges. And the way competition is, you have to be very alert and keep coming up with new ideas. It keeps you on your toes." Mr. Greenberg and Pioneer Linens survived the 1928 hurricane, the Great Depression of the 1930s, the flight by Burdines, Woolworths and other major stores to the Palm Beach Mall in the mid-1960s, the rebirth of the street with martini bars and night clubs in the mid-1990s and its struggles of the past few years.

His hallmarks were quality merchandise and customer service. "We cater to the upscale market," he said in 1990. "We're selling expensive merchandise, but Palm Beach County can support a store like this." Mr. Greenberg adapted to the times. He remodeled his store periodically and when sheets and bedding became more popular, he moved them to the front of the store. He began a mail-order business in the '60s to accommodate his seasonal customers and the Pioneer web site begun by his daughter, Penny Murphy, is a profit center.

Mr. Greenberg was born in Lake Worth in 1915 and attended Palm Beach High School before studying business administration at the University of Florida. He then earned a law degree, though he had no plans to be a lawyer. He was a member of the Florida Bar for more than 50 years.

His father, Max Greenberg, had worked in hardware stores in Newark, N.J., and Daytona Beach before moving to Lake Worth to open Pioneer Hardware on Dixie Highway, just south of Lake Avenue.

It carried chicken wire, kerosene lamps, fish hooks, dynamite for clearing land and guns for hunting turkeys - everything a tent-dwelling settler could need.

By 1924, Pioneer Hardware and Furniture was the largest retailer in town, stocking carpet, electric refrigerators and ready-made furniture. The 1928 hurricane destroyed the store, prompting his father to relocate to 210 Clematis St. in West Palm Beach, where the store has been since 1930.

With the start of the Depression, his father skipped the expensive furniture, instead stocking bedspreads and tablecloths.

"People didn't have the money to buy big-ticket items like furniture, so we went into what we call soft goods," Mr. Greenberg said in 1987, as his store celebrated 75 years in business. They gradually replaced the store's carpeting, lamps and dishes with bedding, towels, linens and draperies.

His store was the quintessential specialty shop, carrying an extensive inventory on the limited area of sheets, towels and tablecloths. Pioneer Linens has long boasted of holding Florida's first white sale in the early 1930s and installing the county's first set of step-on automatic doors around 1950.

"I did everything you could do in a retail store," he once said. "We even went to the dock to pick up merchandise."

He joined the Pioneer firm full-time in 1937, after having worked for his father since he was a boy. He took over the store's day-to-day duties after returning in 1945 from four years in the military, and became owner when his father died in 1959.

"I've always felt there's no way we could duplicate this anywhere else," Mr. Greenberg said in 1987. "Our philosophy here is that we have tried to build a more unique type of operation to attract people. As they say, if you build a better mousetrap, people will beat a path to your door." His father helped establish the first Jewish synagogue in Palm Beach County, Temple Beth Israel, in 1923. His bar mitzvah in 1928 was the temple's first.

He was one of the founding members of the Downtown Development Authority in 1967. In 1996, he was named its first Outstanding Downtown Business Leader of the Year. A year earlier, Mayor Nancy Graham dubbed him "the Mayor of Clematis Street." "George has been here through the ups and downs," she said in 2004. "He's not a guy who complains, he's a guy who tries to solve the problem." In 2004, he was given a lifetime achievement award by the national Home Fashion Products Association.

He also was honored in 1980 by the Florida State Employment Service for having the state's highest percentage of older workers. He said he never thought about the ages of his employees until someone pointed it out to him.

"The older workers here are far more dependable than many younger people we've had," he said at the time. "They have a wealth of experience before they even come here - more experience in working out customer problems, more patience and more tact." The Greenbergs are into the fourth generation running the store, with daughter Penny Murphy and grandson Alan Murphy involved. He played tennis regularly even after a heart attack in 1997. "The best thing is to stay active. When I get to old to play tennis, I'll take up golf," he said in 2004.

"But above all," he said, "the best thing is, we survived." He is survived by his daughter, Penny Murphy (Alan Murphy Sr.) and son George Greenberg Jr. A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Temple Israel, 1901 N. Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach. Donations may be made in his name to the Historical Society of Palm Beach County and the Norton Museum of Art.

I am so glad this is still here. I was privileged to create an oral history of George Greenberg's life with him in 2006 for the Historical Society of Palm Beach County. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing his memories of Lake Worth and West Palm Beach long ago. Transcribing the tapes was an intimate process, and I am grateful his voice is still with me. I know he has left a wonderful legacy in his family and in Pioneer Linens and he can rest in peace knowing you will carry on.

George was a great example of a good citizen and great merchant. I got to know and work with him while I was City Manager of West Palm Beach and as a member of the Kiwanis Club. He truly was the Mayor of Clematis Street and he will be missed.

Dear Penny and family,
Just wanted you to know how very special your dad was to so many. My dad remarked how he enjoyed his talks with your dad at the neighborhood meetings- two original residents who weren't happy with all the new things happening.
He was so fun loving with a beautiful spirit of life. He will be so missed.
The memorial was such an outpouring of love- a proud moment.
Always your friend.

I met George at the Howard Park tennis in the 70's. I was just getting into tennis full time (weekends). My father Wendell Allum had played at 'Howard' for years. I started playing doubles with the veterans(old guys) to have fun and learn. George was one of the veterans. Always the gentleman, always with a smile. I would always stop play and greet him when he arrived at the courts. I am proud to have known such an outstanding person. Miss you George.

I first met Mr. Greenberg at the tennis courts at Howard Park back in 1986.(His first comment to me was please call me George). My husband now Keith Allum and his father Wendell had been friends and played tennis with him for many years. He was the kindest, gentleman I had ever met. I have read many of the entries and I too found that he had never said a cross word...nor do I ever remember anyone ever being cross with him. He was a good man and has left a place in my heart forever. His friends will always remember him. Peace be with you George.

My deepest sympathy to the entire family. I knew George through my mother, Jean Childs Addison who considered him her oldest friend from when they were in grade school in Lake Worth many years ago. Through the years my mother kept in touch with George, sending him birthday cards & cards for special holidays & he sent he many post cards from the many places that he traveled to on his buying trips. When we celebrated my mother's 90th birthday back in 2004 he attended the party as well as took her out to lunch. He also attended the memorial service that we had for her after her death in 2005. If my mother were still alive she would agree with me by saying that he was truly a great gentleman.

Years ago a colleague of mine returned to our office with a story about a man he met in the elevator of the Ritz Carlton. Apparently they stuck up a conversation. When my colleague returned to the office he could not wait to tell everyone about the interesting, intelligent, gentleman he had just met. What a surprise to me to discover it was my cousin George Greenburg. Interesting, intelligent, gentlemanly and most of all kind is how I will remember George.

Eulogy for George Greenberg

George’s family asked me to speak on behalf of a small group of guys that George befriended and “hung out with” for many years. Mike Anderson, Howard Kauff, Ken Mooney, Phil Ward, George and I had dinner together every month, usually at Carmines Ocean Grille. We’re all local businessmen and originally met many years ago as members of a group called TEC, the executive committee.

Our dinners are “a guy thing”… no women are invited. George looked forward to them and probably had the best attendance record of any of us. For 2 to 3 hours once a month our small group of “seemingly respectable”, successful local businessmen, “throw all pretenses to the wind and just have some fun”. While enjoying our “favorite beverages”, we speak freely about everything…no topics are barred. George was our “unofficial leader”, and he was always right in the middle of things. We all probably laugh, talk, and relax, as much, during those 2 hours as we do the rest of the month.

George was the glue that kept our group together for so many years and I hope that our loving memory of our “unofficial leader” keeps us together now. You have read and heard the words describing George…a gentleman, modest, virtuous, gentle but strong, and very smart. His calm, smiling, and strong presence was always felt, most importantly when our discussions got a bit heated. As you probably know, most business owners have strong personalities, opinions, and egos.

At a recent dinner, after George had fallen ill and was unable to attend, we were all marveling over the fact that we had never heard George utter a bad word about anybody. And, on the flip side, none of us had ever heard a negative word said about George. I hope you can understand why this was so amazing to us. When you’re a businessman, it’s awfully hard not to offend somebody, sometime…a customer, a vendor, or an employee.

One of my most vivid memories of George goes back a lot of years when I first joined, TEC. At the monthly meeting, our guest speaker was a financial consultant, advising us on how best to prepare for retirement. First, he said, each of us must make two decisions…at what age we will retire and what we will do after we retire. He then polled each of us on these questions and when he got around the table to George, already in his seventies, George said, “Why would I ever retire? I love what I do every day”. Is it any wonder why Pioneer Linens has been so successful for so long?

Like a lot of you, I’ve attended too many funerals. They all have one thing in common which is the deceased is always eulogized to the extreme…which is fine because, after all, funerals are for the support of the family and friends. But, when you regularly use all of the superlatives to eulogize every person who leaves us, doesn’t it take away from a man like George Greenberg who actually deserves all of the superlatives?

Three of us TEC guys, Jerry, Ken, and I, hosted a surprise 92nd birthday party for George at the Rhythm Café on South Dixie about three months ago. We got there early and his dear friend, Cynthia Laakso, picked George up at his home and drove him to the restaurant. George’s daughter, Penny, joined us later. He was genuinely surprised and he had a great time that night. George was a “lady’s man” and always seemed happiest around attractive women. He had several there for his surprise party…Cynthia & Penny and our dates Harriet Mooney, Catherine Brister, and Nancy Stewart. George danced and frolicked with each of them. I’ve posted the party pictures of George enjoying himself and “tripping the light fantastic” with the girls on this Web site, www.SurprisePartyForGeorge.com. That night is how I want to remember the happiest, nicest man I ever knew.

Dear Penny and George,

I miss your father and mother. They meant so much to my mother and father over so many years, and to me and to Anne. Mom picked your Dad up and they went out to dinner just hours before she had her stroke in 2002, just as they often did. Anne and I will never forget his visit to her a few days later, shortly before she died. We had a wonderful childhood in a safe place because of parents like yours, and the friendships they shared with us. My love and deepest sympathy to you.

Mr. Greenberg was one of the very first people I met when I came to West Palm Beach. He was not only a customer of our newspaper-- our longest-standing customer, in fact-- but I also considered him a friend and role model. When it was time for us to announce an advertising price increase in the newspaper, George was never shy about telling me when he thought it was too much. But I'll never forget the one time he personally drove down here unannounced to tell me that he thought our price increase for that year was fair and warranted. He was a very fair man, and I have great respect for him because of that.
I also had the pleasure of being called to George's office once when he disagreed with my decision to allow a direct-mail marketer to advertise linens in the newspaper. He pulled from his bookshelf a large clip book featuring many of the great ads that Pioneer Linens had published in The Post all these many years-- through good economic times and bad. It didn't take him long to convince me I'd made an error...one that I corrected immediately.
George was one of a kind, and I admired him greatly.

Age never defined George. He was a world traveler and always ready for adventure. He was an athlete and a scholar and always learning. In times often marked by greed and dishonesty, he was generous, with integrity beyond reproach.

George had the rare ability to question without confrontation and share insight without arrogance. Though strong in his knowledge and beliefs, he was always respectful and always the perfect gentleman.

It’s no wonder that we always looked forward to seeing George. That beautiful smile was a window into the heart of a gracious and warm gentle man. He never once disappointed us with a frown or indifference. Never once were we greeted with complaints or pessimism

Although we’ll sadly miss George, he will always be warmly remembered as an extraordinary man and as a wonderful mentor and friend.

I remember the first time I met your Dad, we were building a tunnel under the road while your house was under construction. This dear, gentle man came into our lives six years ago when a good friend introduced us. What a great pleasure it was for us to meet and get to know such a graceful, modest and mild mannered person. In six short years he impacted our lives and our hearts in such a way that we will always remember him.
True Gentleman that he was, George understood that he had strength, and he decided to use that strength - of virtue, mind, humility, character, simple presence and protection - by setting it at the feet of those who knew him; and setting it there so gently that those who knew him were unburdened without knowing why.

Condolences to Penny, Alan and the entire family from everyone at Matouk. Mr. Greenberg was a friend to my grandfather, a mentor to my father, and a role model to me and it seems to everyone who knew him. His generous and energetic spirit will live on in the lives of all of those he touched.

Mr. Greenberg was an inspiration to so many people. Seeing him in his coat and tie every morning opening up the store and picking up his paper made everything seem okay. He will be missed. Clematis won't be the same.

I never got the chance to meet him, but have shared many moving stories about him and his life with his granddaughter whom absolutly adored him. Regardless of the sadness that will obviously be taking place, he is leaving behing a very loving and strong family.

Penny and Georgie (sorry George, but that is the way it's been since 1965).
Betsy and I are truly sorry for the loss of your Dad. He was certainly a Gentleman's Gentleman. He was always extremey nice to me from the time I was hanging around in your house during our Junior Year in high school until the last time I saw him--especially through our difficult times. You and your family will be in our prayers.

George exemplified the true meaning of the word "gentleman," a courteous, gracious man with a strong sense of honor. He was an inspiration to and respected by all who were privileged to know him. His smile portrayed his love of life to the world. To Penny and her family, our deepest condolences. We feel so fortunate to have known your dad and to have had the pleasure of spending time with him.

Thank you all so much for your kind words. I think my grandfather would be in awe of all the fuss that was being made over his death. He was my best friend and a great resource of knowledge and wisdom. He always had good advice no matter what the subject was...He will be missed.
