"nothing can make up for the absence of someone whom we love, and it would be wrong to try to find a substitute; we must simply hold out qnd see it through. that sounds very hard at first, but at the same time it is a great consolation, for the gap, as long as it remains unfilled, preserves the bond between us. it is nonsense to say that god fills the gap; he does not fill it, but on the contrary, he keeps it empty and so helps us to keep alive our former communion with each other, even at the cost of pain." dietrich bonhoeffer, letters and papers from prison

We knew Harold for over 22 years, and the longer we knew him, the more we loved, admired and respected him. He was in a class by himself. Harold, we drank a toast to you at our Passover seder the other evening because we wanted all our family to know what a remarkable person you were.

Our heartfelt sympathy to Helen and all the family.

Rabbi Jeret found the essence of Harold saying, "He was the greatest man I ever knew". To me he was the mentor, father and friend I never had, and the grandfather Kathy always wanted for our children. Because our grief is so heartfelt, we know the loss to Helen and the family is beyond words. Our deepest sympathy is extended to them.

Harold was a great man, father and friend. We will all miss him dearly and are better people for knowing him.

It has been an honor to work closely with this man of such integrity, respect and compassion. The love he expressed for his family and friends was admirable. His wonderful "almost silent" laugh as he shared a joke, humorous story or funny e-mail. His wisdom and experience as he wanted to "teach me something" to become a better person.

The office is quiet now, and I miss him dearly. However, I know that my life is blessed as a result of knowing him.

My sympathies to the Bernstein family. He was a caring, wonderful man who always had a great story to tell, especially how he started his business believing that fuel oil was the right direction versus coal
