Irma McCALL Obituary

McCALL, Irma Winter

Irma Winter McCall, 93, died on October 22, 2014. She grew up in Maplewood, NJ and graduated from Pennsylvania State University where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Irma, a woman of quiet strength, was a wonderful, traditional wife and mother. She happily followed Hank everywhere, moving to Florida because the fish were bigger, traveling the world bird watching, and walking across England. She taught Sunday school at Memorial Presbyterian Church and taught fourth grade at South Olive Elementary School. Hank then decided she should learn the life insurance business and become his office helper. She was a member of Chapter BX of PEO, the Society of the Four Arts, and the Royal Poinciana Chapel. She was predeceased by her husband, C.H. McCall, her son, William Winter McCall, and her son-in-law, Herbert C. Gibson. She is survived by her daughter, Sally M. Gibson, her son, Wallace B. McCall (Michelle), seven grandchildren, H. Terry Gibson (Teresa), Anne G. Burkholder (Matthew), Travis McCall (Laura), Hunter McCall (Sean), Margaret McCall, Kelly Hough (Jeremy), and Abigail McCall. She has seven great-grandchildren, Ashley Grace, Megan, and Karyn Burkholder, Daisy and Liam McCall, and Campbell and Caroline Hough. Donations may be made in her memory to the Royal Poinciana Chapel. A Memorial Service will be held at the Royal Poinciana Chapel, Palm Beach, on Saturday, November 1 at 10:00AM.

I am very sorry to learn of Mrs. McCall's passing. She is that one teacher that had a significant and positive impact on my life. Whenever I would see her in later years, she would always give me a warm welcome and remember my name. The summer following my fourth grade class with Mrs. McCall, her husband, Hank would come to The Breakers for an afternoon swim and tutor me in math for 30 minutes every day. It's rare to find that type of kindness and dedication. I'll remember Hank and
Irma McCall forever. Craig S. West, Atlanta, Georgia.

I have fond memories of Mrs. McCall, my fourth grade teacher! I also remember being in her classroom after school helping to do something when we heard that President Kennedy had been shot. Throughout the years my mom and dad's friendship with both the McCalls kept us close, and I would enjoy encountering both Mr. and Mrs. McCall while walking along the lake in the neighborhood where I grew up. Even after all these years, out of respect, I still refer to my fourth grade teacher as Mrs. McCall.

Irma was a wonderful person. We always enjoyed seeing her and Hank at the Royal Poinciana Chapel on Sundays. Many times when I was riding my bike early morning, I would meet both of them walking along Flagler drive. I would stop and we always had a great conversation about the "Journeys of Life." She was always an engaging person and lived a good Christian life.
