McCALL, Marjorie F.
"Peggy"
Marjorie F. "Peggy" McCall, a long time resident of Boca Raton, died on her 91st birthday, September 18, 2014. She is survived by her daughter Carol (John) McNally of Orlando, sons Howard "Buz" (Pat) of Boca Raton and Russell (Mary) of Denver, CO; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four nieces and nephews. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Howard and sister, Jean Boyd. Peggy was born in New York City to Alfred and Marjorie Frost. Her father was in the fruit broker business and her family lived in many areas along the eastern seaboard before settling in Vero Beach, FL in the late 1930's. She attended Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee and upon returning to Vero Beach to work at the Naval Air Base, she married Howard in 1943.
In 1959, Peggy and Howard and their three children moved to Boca Raton just as the city was beginning its explosive growth. Peggy was very active in her church and the community. She was a founding member of the Debbie Rand Memorial Service League and a member of the Art Guild of Boca Raton. Peggy was a member of the Boca Raton Historical Society and Honorary Trustee having served as treasurer, membership chairman, and then as Archivist for over 25 years. Peggy is referred to as the "Mother of the Archives" because of her work to preserve documents and photographs relating to the history of Boca Raton that might have otherwise been lost. She was an invaluable resource for individuals, students and authors assisting them with research for projects.
Peggy was honored as Woman Volunteer of the Year in 1991 and her name was placed on the Walk of Recognition at Royal Palm Place in 1998. In 2004 she was honored by the Boca Raton Historical Society as a "Legend of Boca", a recognition reserved for people who helped to bring change to Boca Raton for the better. Genealogical research on her own family stimulated her interest in people, their history and how they lived their lives. She loved people, conversation and took time to make others feel important. She never met a stranger that stayed a stranger very long. Peggy and Howard traveled extensively throughout the world and shared their passion for adventure, nature and family for 68 years of marriage. Peggy's life will be celebrated with a Memorial Service and Holy Eucharist on October 11, 2014 at 2:00PM at St. Gregory's Episcopal Church where she was a member for over 55 years. The church is located at 100 Mizner Blvd, Boca Raton, FL. The family requests that remembrances be made in Peggy's name to the Memorial Fund of St. Gregory's Episcopal Church or to the Boca Raton Historical Society General Fund, 71 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL 33432.
