Robert Montgomery Obituary

Famed Palm Beach County civil law attorney and arts patron Robert Montgomery Jr. has died at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

"It's heartbreaking," said Fort Lauderdale personal injury attorney Sheldon Schlesinger, who knew Montgomery for nearly 45 years. "He was the best. There was no better lawyer out there than Bob Montgomery. He was the kind of lawyer you were proud to know ... proud to be a member of your community."

Montgomery estimated he had 65 settlements and verdicts of $1 million or more. Perhaps the best known of these was the state of Florida's lawsuit settlement against the "Big Tobacco" companies that produced a $13.5 billion settlement. Montgomery, of Palm Beach, was the lead attorney for the state.

Bob my dear friend, you left without saying good bye, the last time we spoke you were working in your garden.
But I take refuge that now the angels in heaven are with you and there will be no more pain as you are in the presence of GOD. My deepest regards to the family and your dear wife Margaret.
Now you can really start working on some inventions in heaven

Bob touched more lives than he really knew with his generosity and his patronage of the arts. I will always recall a benefit in his home when Pavorotti was the honored guest. Bob will be remembered as a fine man who gave much of himself to the community.

Dear Courtnay, I was so sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. I lost my mom last year and I know the devastation. Several months ago I'd tried to contact your dad because I was in need of legal help and was surprised to have only recieved a form letter back from him. I'd been a guest of your family at so many events that I thought he might remember me and be able to help or give me some direction, but now I realize he was already too ill. If there is anything that I can do for you, please let me know. There is little that can be said to sooth your heart at this time but know that he loved you and was proud of you. Please give your lovely mom my deepest sympathy. Love your Friend Tammy Procino (PBCC)

He was a great and kind gentleman -a true Southernor who believed in the genteel ways and yet, could be as mean as an aligator when confronted with injustice against the "little guy". We will surely miss him;his kind and generous soul and his way of making anyone coming through his door feel welcome - like long lost family. May he rest in peace knowing that he brought so much of that to so many.

September 11, 2008

We greatly mourn the passing of Robert M. Montgomery Jr., a long time friend and client. Bob was a great lawyer and deeply devoted to the community. He built one of the most powerful and successful law firms in the country. His firm served as a role model of success for other law firms. Bob was one of the first to hire minorities, fought anti-Semitism and represented children and the downtrodden.

He was deeply devoted to the arts and numerous charities. Without Bob the Palm Beach Opera would not be as well known in the world cultural scene. He and his wife Mary often, graciously opened their home to all.

We will miss him.

Dear Mary and Courtney

It is impossible to convey the profound impact Bob had on my professional life. I was privileged to have worked closely with Bob for four years in the mid 70's. I will always be indebted to Bob for giving me my first job as an attorney and for finding the time and patience to mentor me. My entire legal carrier has been affected by Bob's wisdom. When faced with a vexing problem I frequently reflect on how Bob would have handled the situation.

I hope God will quiet your grief and give you wonderful memories of this truly great man. May God bless you and Bob eternally.

Dear Courtney and Mary,
I'm so very sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. Montgomery. He touched so many of us involved in the arts in this community. Courtney I think of you often learning how to make fish at my house and the fun we had in college. A few years ago I needed some equipment for my choir at Suncoast High School and your dad was right there for us. He bought us the best set of sound shell for our theater. Just a sample of the "behind the scenes" work that he did for the arts here. A great man that will be missed. My prayers are with you I recently lost my dad and I know how difficult this time is.

Mrs. Montgomery,
The first time I met you and your lovely husband was the day after I married Jeff. We had a simple wedding under the kapok tree on Palm Beach so we were splurging on an elegant dinner at Cafe L'Europe. Bob saw us from across the room and said he could see my ring shining from far away. Long after you were gone we asked for our check and waiter explained that Mr. Montgomery had taken care of it. Later I found out this was a typical random act of kindness that he practiced. I was so impressed with how nice you both were and we have tried to imitate what you did over twenty years ago. It is stories like this that will allow Bob Montgomery to live on in the hearts of this community. God Bless you during this time of loss.

August 6, 2008

I never did many jury trials but I remember fighting it out with Bob on a one day jury trial. At a recess, he was having a mint and I asked him for one. He tossed it like a football to me and laughed with me. That broke the tension of the trial. I won the case and still have the sign from the door of the courtroom when I "beat" Bob Montgomery in a jury trial. That was 25 years ago.

He was always kind and professional to me. My legal path moved to bankruptcy but we still stayed in touch. Whenever I needed help, he gladly gave of his time and I learned to do the same. Remember the movie where the theme was Pass it On? That's what Bob did and we can all follow his example.

He was a great man and we will all miss him.

Bob Montgomery had such a positive impact on so many of us over the years. He hired me out of law school twenty years ago. I followed him when he relocated his practice. If I have enjoyed any success in law, I owe that to Bob. His passing brings a tear to my eye, as it will to so many. I miss you Bob.

I am neither a member of the Jewish community or the legal profession, but the Bob Montgomery I remember and greatly respected came from my 25 years with the Palm Beach Fire Department. I hope he is not remembered solely for his legal successes. God speed to his family.

My sincere condolences to Mary and the family. I was a young paralegal escaping from the insurance industry when Bob decided to go to the "plaintiff side" of the business. I spent 4 challenging years with the old Montgomery, Lytal, Reiter firm and to work with him directly. I was fortunate to attend his 65th birthday party at the Palm Beach Yacht Club and to comment that he influenced my subsequent professional life would be an understatement. I learned much from my experience and it served me well. His virtues, intelligence, loyalty and tenacity will be missed, as he clearly left this Earth much better than before he arrived. So here is wishing you God's speed.........

I worked with Bob in representing the widow of schoolteacher Barry Grunow, in a landmark case against the maker of the Saturday Night Special gun used by a school kid to kill Grunow, his teacher. It was a difficult case, but Bob was outraged that such cheap, concealable guns were so accessible to a kid -- and he wanted to do justice for a grieving young family. My experience with Bob showed his extraordinary ability and presence in the courtroom, and a heart just as big. He will be missed, but cannot be replaced.

A giant light has been spent...I had the honor of being someone he knew since I worked at his old law firm of Montgomery, Lytal, et al, and then went on for the last 30 years with Edna L. Caruso, P.A. He would call the office and I would say "RMMjr's on the phone!" when he had an appellate issue/case. He'd actually take the time to speak to me! and made me feel I was important and special.
He was a perfectionist when it came to the pleadings he wanted filed and he'd look them over and say "...make them look pretty!" in that Southern drawl of his...
He was a source of great knowledge and an extraordinary man on many levels. I always called him whenever a friend or family member needed a Doctor or Hospital and I would only chose the ones he recommended!! I am stunned and so saddened by his passing and convey my deepest condolences to his family and close friends.

To Whom It May Concern :

I never got to meet Robert Montgomery but I know some other of his partner lawyers .
As a paralegal myself I always feel that Robert was the greater of all Palm Beach County lawyers .
Besides,he knew how to win major cases and when he took a case for sure he was able to won big time money for his clients .
Rest in peace now Robert .
Thanks.

Ms. Montgomery and Courtnay:

My heart felt sympathy goes out to you both. It was a honor and my pleasure to have known such a person with so many qualities and generous nature who wanted the best for everyone.

You will remain in my prayers.

Bob kept a Theodore Roosevelt quote on a plaque on his bookshelf. Whenever we would suffer a defeat or setback, he would pick it up and read it to us:
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat."
Bob had a courageous spirit and was a great mentor and trial lawyer. My deepest condolences to his family in this time of loss.

I had the pleasure of working for Mr. Montgomery. He always greeted me a smile and a fabulous southern "Good Morning Tami" when he walked in the door. I am so very sad and proud to say I know Bob Montgomery

Mary, My deepest sympathy. Bob has effected so many lives in a positive manner that words cannot adequately convey how much we have appreciated knowing him.
