George Scott Obituary

George William Scott

February 2, 1934 - August 21, 2025

George William Scott, 91, of Bloomington passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, at his home. George was born February 2, 1934, to James B. and Marjorie (Noggle) Scott.

George felt like his birthday was a national holiday since it was Groundhog Day and they dressed up in tuxedos in Pennsylvania for the occasion. He was also proud of the fact that he was born in a tenant house on the G. J. Mecherle (founder of State Farm Insurance) farm.

George proudly served his country in the Army for two years. He was part of the NATO occupied forces in Germany using his skills as fire direction control for the 105 Howitzer.

He was a real estate appraiser for Champion Federal Savings and Loan retiring in 1996 after 35 years of employment. George coached girls little league softball in Downs for his daughter's team for several years and was on the Bloomington Township Water District board for the rural area, serving two years as Vice Chairman. He also was tax assessor for Old Town Township. After retiring from Champion Federal he worked for several years as a courier driver for CIB and read meters for Corn Belt Electric.

George was the beloved husband of Jill (Gibson) Scott. They married September 14, 1985 and would have celebrated 40 years of marriage in a few weeks.

He was proud of his children and was the loving father of Steele (Kate) Scott and Todd (Angela Reynolds) Scott of Bloomington and Julie (Scott-husband) Hugill of Edmonds, WA. He loved his grandchildren Darcie and Dan Scott, Jessica (Bhavin) Scott Patel, Kyle (Danielle) Scott and Liam and Logan Hugill. He was a great-grandfather to five. George was very fond of his brother-in-law, Jerry Gibson and his wife Marian.

George was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Paul and a sister, Cleo Sparrow. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Benton (Benny) Scott.

George and Jill enjoyed traveling and his favorite kind of travel was cruising.

He almost always had a smile and loved telling a joke (even though we had heard most of them multiple times)!

"George... We know you are still telling jokes to your friends so we say to you, behave yourself up there. You know what to do if you can't... CALL ME!!!!"

Friends may greet the family Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 1700 N Towanda Ave, Normal, IL, beginning at 10:00 AM. A tribute to George will follow at 11:00 AM. If anyone has any "George stories" please share them during the tribute. There will be a private burial service in the afternoon at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Downs, IL.

The family would like to sincerely thank Carle Hospice- Heather, Anna and Kevin, for the loving care and guidance they gave George and Jill these past few months. They would also like to thank Synergy Home Care for their advice and assistance and the wonderful caregivers that were sent their way.
