Harold L. Smith
Harold L. Smith, 66, of Spring, Texas, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011. He was born on Dec. 11, 1945.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie E. Smith, father Herman K. Smith, and brother Herman A. Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Heite Smith; daughter Penny Smith Smethers, husband Paul and grandchildren Emily and Blake; son Brian Smith, wife Jennifer and grandchildren Brianna, Dylan, and Jenna; and daughter Holly Smith Taylor, fiancée James "Scooter" Cooey and grandchildren Mackenzie and Cy Taylor.
Harold was a 1964 Reagan High School graduate and a 1970 University of Houston graduate with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked for Lubrizol Corporation where he co-opted in college and was then employed for 32 years until retirement. He was ordained a Deacon at Heights First Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Genoa where he lead the youth choirs and was an active member. He was actively involved in his children's lives by coaching soccer and baseball in the Sagemont area where the family lived for 20 years. He also actively supported the J. Frank Dobie band and athletic departments for his children. He then moved to Deer Park where he continued his support of Deer Park High School drill team for his daughter. Once in Deer Park he became involved with the Texas Scholars Program and worked closely with the Deer Park and La Porte school districts. He was a mentor for students at La Porte Elementary. He was named the 1999 Deer Park Outstanding Citizen for his dedication for improvement in schools and the community. After retirement he and his wife moved to Spring, followed by his children, to enjoy time with his children and grandchildren.
Harold was a fun, loving, and caring individual that never met a stranger. He always wanted a hand shake or a hug and had a cute nickname for us all. Although his last years were a struggle with diabetes, he was a fighter and a stubborn man determined to prove the doctors and family wrong and make it through the trying times. We are lucky to have another angel in Heaven watching over us and protecting us as God wanted to call him home to be with Him. We will see you there in the streets lined in gold.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 2:00 pm. at Klein Memorial Park and Mausoleum Chapel at 9714 FM 2920 Tomball, TX 77375. For further information or directions, please contact 281-351-7233.
