He was an amazing man who was influential to me at the right time in my life.He knew exactly what to say and how to say it at the exact time I needed it. I called him the "Gatekeeper" in High School. He impressed on me that I was embarking on a strange journey that I would not always understand or comprehend, but that just getting past him was not the objective, just merely a chapter in my book of life and that I must focus on the the person I was made to be for the end of the book. Thank you Mr. Bains. Class of 1980

I will never forget Mr. Bains. The first day of class he would announce, from behind his lecturn with his little microphone, "if you come into class after the bell, now don't be difficult. Just come up and say, 'Mr. Bains, may I please have a detention ship'".
A life well lived indeed. I'm guessing that heaven is a bit better organized these days.

Mr. Bains attended the Bible Study that my husband and I teach at the Waterford at Deer Park. Each Thursday after Bible Study, he would meet us after class and tell us all of the words we mispronounced, all of the facts that he thought were incorrect, and then tell us a joke or two. It may sound a bit mean, but Mr. Bains told us that he did this because he wanted us to be better speakers and he wanted us to grow in our speaking skills. The Lord really used him to help us, and ever since day one, we have grown so much and now we sound much better when public speaking. Thank you, Mr. Bains, for everything!

Jack Bains challenged us. He not only educated us in school but his thought provoking methods made us think outside ourselves. One of the dearest people I've ever met. His very presence involked respect and awe. A master at his vocation. He truly was "the gentle giant". His warm, mild mannered spirit is what I will remember. He spoke without saying a word.
God Bless You Mr. Bains as you have blessed so many. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us all these years. Just reading the guest book should fill your hearts to know how many lives he touched while walking this earth. He impacted so many .
Thank you Jesus for sharing Jack Bains. He is with you once again.

I was Mr. Bains' assistant my senior year. We had a lot of great conversations! What I'll remember him for most though are his kind, comforting, words after we learned about the Space Shuttle Challenger. A couple of other teachers looked at me like I was weird for crying; Mr. Bains put his hand on my shoulder and talked me through it. I'll always carry fond memories of him. PHS '86

Mr. Bains was a man of integrity, knowledge, strength, and wit to match no other. His stern looks in 1971 demanded attention and made you want to do your best in government but his tender side for all of his students lent the respect he so richly deserved. His love for all of his students and peers through the years was shown in his many stories that he recounted at his 90th birthday party. Keep the Angels laughing Mr. Bains. You will long be remembered and thank you.

Mr. Bains was one great teacher! I was fortunate to have been able to tell him that several years ago when he sat at the same dinner table with my Mother at the Waterford in Deer Park. One could not help but be inspired with his presentation and content. My interest in government was certainly magnified from what I learned from him. I guess I can hold him responsible for me running for public office and even getting elected! I wish I would have known before today that he graduated from Robert E. Lee the same year as my Dad. I'm sure he could have held a class full of interesting material on that. Thanks Mr. Bains for making a difference in my life. Hoagy Powell, Class of 1970

My friend. A GREAT MENTOR.
Mr. Bains loved to pick on me and thats because he lived across the street forever... It would rain and afterwards he would see me outside and I'd hear "MARY JUNE"! "Yes Mr. Bains" "YOU washed your car again didnt you?" YES SIR.
My brothers and I were also privi to not only having him and the family as a neighbor but we all had him for homeroom and Govt.
I'd like to add that the Bains felt confident enough to ask ME to babysit Buddy and I did so everytime they asked. I'D BE CRAZY NOT TOO. (Little humor for you JACK). We will ALL, YOUR OTHER KIDS, will miss you so. GODS BLESSINGS. I KNOW how happy you are to see your wife again. LOVE YOU!

Another significant member of the greatest generation has left us. As a student in his class back in the 60's, I never thought of Mr. Bains as soldier. He was my teacher. Reading his obit, I am intrigued that such a benevolent individual could survive the war, return home, and "dedicate" himself to teaching for so many years. He definitely impacted many young lives. God bless you, Mr. Bains

One of the best teachers I ever had. He clearly expected the best from his students. I will never forget his withering looks when you gave a ridiculous answer, and his genuine satisfaction when you did well. When I was awarded my doctorate, he was one of those whom I quietly thanked when crossing the stage. God bless you, Mr. Bains.

I graduated PHS in 1983 and I sincerely owe that to Mr Bains. Mr Bains was my Homeroom teacher all 4 years of Highschool. When I went to him and told him I cannot pass his Government class, he told me if I turn in every Current Event on every Friday, he would pass me....and he did!!! I remember getting my Diploma and walking off the stage, straight to Mr. Bains and hugging him and thanking him. He always had a special place in my heart, and always will.

Mr. Bains was one of the teachers that made a huge impact on me. I remember the time that I was elected as Student of the Month by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. I didn't know that the Citizen had published an article with my picture reporting the event. The next morning, Mr. Baines handed me the article that he had clipped, I looked down at the article and, when I looked back at him, he was smiling and said "I'm proud of you". I'll never forget that moment.
