SALLY ALVID Obituary

Sally age 74, was called home by our Lord and granted eternal life on August 29, 2014. She passed away peacefully surrounded by both her sons and grandson Matthew at her home after a courageous five year battle with cancer. Sally was born on April 10, 1940, to Gaspar and Carlota Savala and lived in Pinedale, CA. Determined to get the best education possible, Sally picked various crops in the summer and worked at Sears Roebuck throughout the school year to finance her education at San Joaquin Memorial High School. After graduating from San Joaquin Memorial, Sally pursued a degree in Liberal Arts at California State University, Fresno. For over four decades, Sally pursued a career as a teacher and administrator with Fresno Unified School District. Always a role model, Sally had an immeasurable impact on the lives of the students she taught. Her greatest joy was inspiring young students to believe in themselves, to set high expectations, and to always strive towards achieving their goals. Sally's passions were cooking, gardening, traveling the world, and caring for her children, grandchildren, and immediate relatives. Sally married Sam Alvidrez in 1968 and had two sons, Steven and Laurence. Sally is survived by her siblings Joyce Flores, Arlene Najera, Fred Savala, Rudy Savala, and Tom Savala; sons Steven and Laurence and his wife Hülya; stepson Shane; her grandson Matthew; granddaughter Alanna; godson, Robert Savala; granddogs, Roxie and Astro; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Our family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Dina Ibrahim, Linda Santoya and the staff at California Cancer Center for their valiant effort and compassionate care. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at Tinkler Funeral Home, 475 North Broadway Fresno, CA 93701 at 7:00 p.m. on September 11, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John's Cathedral on Friday, September 12, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., 2814 Mariposa St, Fresno, CA 93721. A Graveside Service will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, 264 No. Blythe Ave. Fresno, CA 93706.

Incredibly sad to hear of Sally's passing. Sally was a dear friend to our family for over 20 years. We first became acquainted with her at Mayfair Elementary. She always shared inspirational stories every time we met. She spoke proudly of her family especially her own children. Her love of the arts, culture and education I will always remember. She is, and will be greatly missed. Blessings and condolences to her family. Enjoy paradise Mrs. Alvid.

So sad to learn that Sally left us during my foray to France -- she would have so enjoyed the "travel report". Sally will be greatly missed by the family and all of her friends. Sorry not to have been here. With my love, your former "niece-in-law", colleague, and keeper of the family genealogy database! Holly

Sally was my favorite teacher at Winchell Elementary. I loved her. She was exceptional. She treated me with kindness & sparked my curiosity about the world with her travels to Honduras & Mexico. She taught me that I could do anything & she believed in me. She was an amazing cook & I'll never forget her having our entire class over for dinner. And no paper plates were used. Her best dinnerware was on the table. She made us feel very special. She was the best teacher & friend. May her soul soar above the clouds to our Lord and rest safely in His presence. Sally your legacy lives on in your family and in people like me. You've touched my life forever. Rest In Peace. Family, you're in my prayers.
