SCOFIELD, Martin Whalen

Martin Whalen Scofield, a long time resident of Arcadia, California passed away on September 4th, 2012 at the age of 82.

Martin was born on April 2nd, 1930 in Neligh, Nebraska to Kenneth Alan Scofield and Nell Kathleen Whalen. He was the oldest son of nine siblings. Martin was enamored with the outdoors from an early age and spent most of his childhood doing what he loved most: spending time on the river near his home, swimming, building forts and tree houses and letting his imagination guide him in nature.

At the age of 18, Martin proudly joined the U.S. Navy and served at Adak naval station in the Aleutian Islands and aboard the USS Renville-227. In Tokyo, Japan, he worked in the office under General MacArthur's command. After serving in the Navy, Martin returned to Nebraska and graduated from Norfolk Junior college. In 1956, he moved to Los Angeles, California where he met his wife, the love of his life for over 50 years, Ada Leclair. For the next 30 years he worked for the Department of Water and Power where he was beloved by his coworkers for his dry wit and easygoing spirit. In 1992, Martin retired from the DWP and embarked on a second career partnering with his wife in real estate.

Among his many varied interests, Martin was an avid world traveler, outdoorsman, sports enthusiast, historian, gardener, music aficionado and voracious readers. Above all else, his main interest was his family. He loved and cared for them deeply, every day of his life.

Martin is survived by his siblings: Eleanor, Alan, Joel, Kathleen, Stephen, Denis, Sheila, Susan, his wife of 52 years Ada, his three children, Timothy, Jeffrey, Bridgid, and his four grandchildren, Morgan, Tate, India and Matthew as well as many other family members and friends.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, September 10th, 2012 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Arcadia, California followed by interment services at Resurrection Cemetery in Montebello, California. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Italian Catholic Federation, Holy Angels, Branch 218. We love you Marty. You will be deeply missed.
