Gwendolyn Meade Obituary

Gwendolyn Samaha Meade departed this earth on April 20, 2024, two months shy of her 84th birthday. She epitomized the American story, born in Baton Rouge, La., to a father who immigrated to the USA from Lebanon through Ellis Island at the tender age of four and a mother whose family arrived here pre-revolution via ship and the Acadian migration. She left Baton Rouge at a young age and started her adult life in Houston, Texas, where her children were born and where she eventually settled in the suburb of Pearland for the remaining 57 years of her life.

Gwendolyn so loved this wonderful earth that she'd rather have lived here eternally. She loved animals, especially dogs and horses...Triple Crown season was always greatly anticipated in her home. She was intelligent, loved to read, was a fabulous writer and a voracious consumer of news. She discussed world events with her children at the dinner table from the time they were very young, long before the advent of "24 hour news channels." While she loved her children, whom she reared alone, her grandchildren were the lights of her life. The two, born 22 years apart, brought her more joy than she had ever known. Stricken with renal cancer in 2014, she fought the good fight for 10 years until cancer finally claimed her. She passed away at home in relative peace and relieved of the pain and the fear, surrounded by her family, with her parrot, Billy keeping watch and her faithful little dogs, Maya, Allie, Sassy and Bella close by her side.

Gwendolyn was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Anita Brown Todd and Oliver Prater; her father and stepmother, Ellis Samaha and Anna Belle Nolan Samaha; her sister, Pamela Samaha Guarisco; her brothers, Craig Samaha, Ronald MacArthur, David Samaha and Oliver "Buddy" Prater; as well as beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her sister, Diane Prater Becker; brothers, Kenneth Samaha, Brent Samaha and his wife, Melanie and E. Douglas Samaha and his wife, Jo; her daughters, Dawn Meade, Candice Meade and Julee Meade; her sons, Michael Prater and his wife, Cheryl and Calvin Meade and his wife, Maria; her grandchildren, Ashley Lozano and Lincoln Meade; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Gwendolyn's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on June 1, 2024, at Unity Church, 2929 Unity Dr., Houston, Texas 77057, in the Chapel at the Welcome Center, reception following. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Hospital or the charity of your choice.

Mama - I'm sitting here at my little spinnet desk that you liked so much, in your beautiful living room, looking out upon the front yard. Tomorrow is Mother's Day, and I am so wishing you were here. I face my second Mother's Day without you and I don't believe that it will ever get easier. Two of your rose bushes succumbed to yet another couple of cold winter days this year, as did your little lemon tree. I wrapped the tree well, but it just couldn't make it. I'll plant another and we'll try again. However, all of your pink roses and four of your reds survived. Tomorrow, as I think of you, I'm going to clean out your beds, transplant your pink roses to your beds around the back patio, and put brand new rose soil on top to feed them. I ordered six bags today, which should be plenty. The roses will be vibrantly thriving by your birthday!! The two gardenia bushes I planted in your big blue planters survived and are blooming well. They are still small and not yet very fragrant, but they are pretty!! Greg passed away March 14th, just one day before his 62nd birthday. So tragic to die so young, but Parkinson's is a tough one and there's little that can be done about it. Greg was no you. You fought like hell to keep your hold on this beautiful life and you deserved every second you kept. You were such a trooper. You didn't complain. You simply faced cancer like the boss you are. There's no one like you. I'm a poor substitute, but I'll work as hard as I can to help fill your void. Easter came late this year, and since we were able to enjoy Easter with you last year, this was the last "first" without you. Going forward, everything is a "second" and beyond. I miss you every day. You are my first thought in the mornings and my last thought before I sleep. That has always been and always will be. I look forward to the day though, that I think of you and don't cry or feel an ache in my heart. I look forward to the day that I wake up, think of you, and smile with sweet memories and no melancholy. I laugh because that is a long, long road ahead! Happy Mother's Day my little Mama!!!!

Very sorry to learn of your mother's death, Dawn & family. I only met her a few times, but I remember her as being a vivid personality, passionate & feisty. Donation will be to Pearland Canine Resource Center. God Bless.

Mama,

I love you and will miss you until I see you again. I know you are there now with Nana, Ronny, Buddy, and David. I know Grandpa Samaha, and Anna Belle, Pam, and Craig are there too and that there is no discontent whatsoever. These are the people you wanted to see the most and I know you are finally HOME! Give all my puppies a hug and I know I'll be there with you all one day. Until then I'll think about you every day. I love you so much!!

Oh Mama, how I´ve dreaded losing you. You are my lifelong rock and my best friend. I shall miss you all the days of my life. Nevertheless, I´m so glad to know you are free of pain and Home with, as you said, your "people." I love you with all my heart. Dawn
