Florine Marshall was born May 27, 1939 in Billings, Montana to Otis F. and Almeda E. (Grose) Hopper. Her mother died of polio in 1941. Her father remarried Margaret Jacobson four years later.
Florine graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1957. Sharon Marshall set her up with her brother Darrell to attend a Christmas Formal in her Junior year. They were married July 19, 1958.
Florine was a member of the United Methodist Church and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was employed most of her married life. Three of her favorite jobs were as a dental assistant for seven years; a school secretary and school clerk which began in Moore, Montana and continued after moving to Alaska for the Lake and Peninsula School District. She retired after 18 years as a school secretary. She and her husband Darrell retired to Northwest Montana on Flathead Lake, where they built two homes.
In 2007, they returned to Alaska settling in Soldotna near the Kenai River. When the Soldotna Methodist Church was advertising for an administrative assistant, Florine placed her resume with them, was hired and remained in that position for three years until her diagnosis of cancer in 2020.
Florine lost that battle when the cancer erupted once more in June 2025. She passed away July 27, 2025 at the age of 86.
Florine loved her family and friends and her Labradors. As a woman of faith she reached out to others through the church prayer chain, the Community Food Pantry and she read scripture once a month during worship. Among her other interests were journaling, gardening, quilting and reading.
Florine appreciated her daily routines. She was organized and loved to clean. Most days included jigsaw puzzles in the morning and a single scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate in the afternoon.
She is survived by her husband, Darrell; two sons, Michael of Bellingham, WA, Daniel and wife Jackie of Seward, AK; grandsons, Jacob Marshall of Soldotna, AK and Michael Marshall and wife Brandi of Custer, South Dakota; granddaughters, Ashley Thompson, husband David of Bellingham, WA, and Kelsey Marshall of Mount Vernon, WA; great-granddaughter, Airi Thompson of Bellingham, WA; brother, James Hopper and wife Jan of Parker, CO; sister Julie Koch and husband Mark of Spokane, WA and Labrador Retrievers, Molly and Selah of Seward.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025 at the Soldotna Methodist Church in Soldotna, AK.
