Charles Summers Obituary

Charles Edwards

Summers, Jr.

"Chuck"

Charles "Chuck" Edwards Summers, Jr., age 67, of Pensacola, passed away on October 26, 2016. He was born in Washington, D.C. and had resided in Pensacola for over fifty years.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, whom he was married to for over 36 years; his two daughters, Tina (Kent) Brock and Ashley (Rusty) Lyttle; his four precious granddaughters, Lauren (Josh) Graves, Samantha Brock, Hannah Lyttle, and Haley Lyttle; his brothers Scott and Tim Summers; and, his beloved companion, Jessie. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dorothy Summers, and his brother, Thomas Summers.

He served in the United States Marine Corps for a short period of time in 1966 during the Vietnam War Era. Throughout his life, our "jack-of-all-trades" was a car mechanic, snapper fisherman, a certified HVAC technician, a lab technician at Monsanto, a master electrician at Ingall's Shipyard, and a Class "B" wastewater treatment plant operator for People's Water and ECUA in Pensacola. His long term career was with the University of West Florida, where he began as a wastewater treatment plant operator, advancing quickly to a maintenance and HVAC mechanic. He earned his Associate of Science degree in Building Construction at Pensacola State College while working full-time and ultimately became a Construction Project Manager for telecommunications design and installation in the UWF Facilities Construction Management Department. He retired from UWF in 2005 after 26 years of service.

He was the recipient of a liver transplant from Ochsner Hospital on December 18, 2001, which gave him his second chance at life thanks to his donor, Rebekah. He would always say he had two birthdays, one in September and one in December. He was passionate about fast cars, fishing, hunting, and most recently, wood working. During his retirement he also volunteered as a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Escambia County Search and Rescue, as he felt it was his way of giving back to the community after his transplant. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Chuck was a man full of many stories, a friend and mentor to all, a good husband, and a dad who cherished his family of girls. We have all been truly blessed to have shared our lives with him.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tues., Nov. 1, 2016 at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with Pastor Phillip Phifer officiating. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. prior to services.

Karen, I'm really going to miss Chuck and the friendship we had for over thirty years. All the wild times stopped with age and sickness, but the memories of them will always be with me. All the stories I won't be able to recall, since there were so many. Sometimes they changed a little, with time, but that just made them better. He was lucky to have you, to save his first life, and care for him so well, all the way through the next one he got as a bonus.

I am so sorry to hear of Chuck's passing. Having just read the story of his life, I can see he was literally a jack of all trades while always remaining true to the interests he had when I knew him years ago. I remember him fixing our car several times when we were broke college students and I remember making homemade strawberry ice cream while listening to his surround sound stereo. He was even nice enough to let me listen to John Denver although I'm sure he was not a fan! I'm thinking of you, Karen, and sending love to you and your girls. Rest in peace, Chuck.

Karen and girls,
I am so sorry for your loss! I am truly thankful for Chuck's presence in my life! He was a great boss...provided so many opportunities for personal and career development during his time as my supervisor! But, he was also a dear friend! It saddens me that we won't get to talk anymore in this life, but I pray Chuck is in a better place, free of pain and suffering!
Love and prayers to you all, Robin

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. I did not know Chuck well. We meet at Grace Lutheran Church. He was always very kind and welcoming. Although I did not know him long, I will always consider him a friend and am grateful that I had the chance to know him.
