Henry Backer Obituary

FERDINAND – Henry "Hank" Backer, 87, of Ferdinand passed away Wednesday, May 24, at his home. He was born May 3, 1930, in Ferdinand to Dr. Henry G. and Frances (McLaughlin) Backer. Hank earned a master's degree at Indiana State University and was a retired math teacher at Cannelton High School. He was a Korean War Army Veteran serving in the 116th Combat Engineering Branch. He was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand. He was a member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Hank enjoyed reading, hunting, playing cards and playing tennis. He was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Hasenour, and four brothers, Dave, Pat, John and Larry Backer.
Survivors include three sisters, Sr. Phyllis Backer MMS of Philadelphia, Penn., Mary Jo Uebelhor of Jasper and Margaret "Margie" Backer of Ferdinand; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Backer of Jasper and Selma Backer of St. Meinrad; three brothers, Dr. George "Pete" ( Dr. Barbara) Backer of LaPorte, Dr. Thomas (Pamela) Backer of Erlanger, Ky., and Dr. Joseph (Lucia) Backer of McLean, Virg. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 30, in Saint Ferdinand Catholic Church, with Becher Funeral Home, Ferdinand, in charge of arrangements.
