B. Hubbard Obituary

B. Arthur Hubbard Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Dr. B. Arthur Hubbard Jr., 90, passed away Monday, June 28, 2010, in his residence at Atlantic Shores in Virginia Beach. Although born in Petersburg, Va., Dr. Hubbard considered himself a lifelong resident of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. He graduated from Maury High School in 1938 and went on to earn a B.S. in chemistry and biology from The College of William and Mary. After serving in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps during World War II, Dr. Hubbard entered the Medical College of Virginia, graduating in 1949. He then began a 45-year medical career as a family practitioner in the Tidewater area. Dr. Hubbard practiced in an era when a family doctor delivered babies, made house calls, and played an important role in the lives of his patients and their families. During his career, Dr. Hubbard was on staff at three area hospitals: Leigh Memorial, Norfolk General and Bayside. He also served as chairman of the Department of Family Practice at Bayside Hospital on three different occasions and as an assistant professor of Clinical Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Toward the end of his career, Dr. Hubbard worked as a volunteer at the Chesapeake Care Clinic. Other than his medical practice, Dr. Hubbard was most proud of his service in the U.S. military. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps in 1951 and then became a part of the Army National Guard Medical Corps in 1962, where he remained until retiring as a brigadier general in 1983. During these years in the National Guard, Dr. Hubbard received the Virginia National Guard Legion of Merit and the Second Legion of Merit. He was a longtime member and supporter of the American Legion Post No. 35, where he also served as commander. Dr. Hubbard is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Jordan Hubbard; three sons, Benjamin A. Hubbard III and his wife Mary of Virginia Beach, R. Kim Hubbard and his wife Ann of Chesapeake, Kevin L. Hubbard and his wife Missy of Chesapeake; six grandchildren, Cheryl Hubbard Gahagan of Columbia, S.C., Jennifer Hubbard Winslow of Charlottesville, Va., Owen Hubbard, Jordan Hubbard, Loren Hubbard and Sarah Hubbard, all of Chesapeake; and five great-grandchildren. Dr. Hubbard's father, B.A. Hubbard Sr., was one of the original founders of Ocean View Presbyterian Church where a memorial service will be held Friday, July 2, at 10:30 a.m. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Arthur Jensen and a reception will follow at the church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ocean View Presbyterian Church, 9200 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA 23503.

I'm so very sad to hear of Dr. Hubbard's passing. He was a great friend to our family, especially to Daddy. He gave me my first job in healthcare 37 years ago, and and I will forever be in his debt for that wonderful experience and opportunity.

I was very sorry to hear about "Uncle Arthur's" passing. I remember him and his family from early childhood spending many hours at Elizabeth Gale's home. He was very respected and admired.
