Elizabeth Duvall Obituary

Elizabeth Duvall

Chesapeake - Elizabeth, known as Betty to her many friends and relatives, passed away at McKee Medical Center on Friday, December 26, 2014. Betty was born on March 5, 1939 in what is now Suffolk, Virginia, the daughter of Judson Paul and Louise Baines. Betty grew up in Suffolk, Virginia, and attended Whaleyville High School and graduated in 1956.

Betty loved to travel and she was in the process of planning several trips- one to Virginia to visit her friends and family, and a vacation to Europe with her best friend from college. Her favorite place in the world was England which she visited several times during her life. Betty's passion was her children and grandchildren. She was an amazingly generous and giving person to her family and her community. She was active in the Larimer County Republican Party and a board member of the Cottonwood Meadows Homeowner's Association.

Betty married Charles T. Perlick in 1960 and has two children from that marriage, Michael Perlick and Karen Martin. In 1984, Betty married Thomas R. Duvall and was happily married to him until his death in 2008.

Betty taught high school Chemistry from the time she graduated from Meredith College until she retired in 2002. Her students were always top performers on the AP Chemistry tests and won awards at regional and national Science Fairs. Betty was awarded Chemistry Teacher of the Year by the Hampton Roads ACS in 1986. Betty considered the thousands of young people she taught as her children, not just as students.

After retirement, Betty continued to be active in the field of education by tutoring 5th grade students in Math and coaching students for standardized tests. In 2010, Betty relocated to Loveland, Colorado to be closer to her children and grandchildren. In Loveland, she volunteered her time to tutor 3rd grade students at Van Buren Elementary School in Reading, and to mentor students at Bill Reed Middle School.

Betty not only loved to teach, she loved to learn. Betty earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC in 1960. She earned her Master's Degree in Education from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC in 1966. Betty then earned a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Administration from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA in 1976.

Betty is survived by her sister Jeanette Van Tassel of Stafford, VA; her son Michael Perlick of Loveland, CO; her daughter Karen Martin of Loveland, CO; and her much-beloved grandchildren Andrew Martin and Daniel Martin. Betty is also survived by many cousins and many, many friends.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 Lincoln Avenue, Loveland CO.

I am saddened to just learn of Bettys passing. I was reintroduced to an old high school friend and was taken back and decided to look for my favorite teacher, Mrs. Duvall. Betty was a wonderful teacher and mentor to me at Frank W Cox in 1988. She sponsored a club, Happy Club, that I started, which supported Operation Smile. She was the most encouraging, supportive, and caring teacher that I had all through high school. I will always remember her fondly.

I was so saddened to hear of Betty's passing. I taught with Betty at Kempsville High School in Va Beach years ago. I have never met a more gracious and classy person.
Additionally, she was the consummate professional, and her students regarded her as a mother and mentor. She was never dissuaded by petty educational movements.
Michael and Karen, your mother was a dear friend to me, and please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Betty was a colleague of mine at Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, VA. In my 30 years of teaching, I have never known a more caring, concerned person or any teacher who could teach and relate to her students as she did. I remember that in addition to teaching Chemistry, she taught manners and etiquette to her students when she had some spare time.
What a beautiful soul Betty has. She was a dear, dear friend to me, and I was hoping to visit her this summer.
I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing.
My sincere condolences to all of you.
