John Kelly

Virginia Beach - John Jackson Kelly, IV, 66, passed away on June 20, 2018 at the Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, VA. He was predeceased by his mother, Helen R. Handy Kelly. John is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Alma Paul Kelly; his three children, Mary K. Kelly (Tony), John J. Kelly V, "Jay" (Devon), Amanda A. Kelly, and one grandchild, Savannah L. Jaecks; his father, John J. Kelly, III, his brother, James B. Kelly and his sister, Ann W. Kelly, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and loyal friends. John was born in Richmond, VA and spent his summers in Gloucester Banks, VA. He attended Douglas Freeman High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1971-1973. He later graduated from Old Dominion University in 1987. John worked for Jefferson Lab until he retired in 2012. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal in Virginia Beach and enjoyed playing the guitar during fellowship. He was an avid fly fisherman. John's love for science intertwined with his love of nature and his passion for the outdoors. He was an active member of Trout Unlimited and was involved in various environmental causes in the Hampton Roads area. He enjoyed volunteering his time teaching fly fishing and fly tying for Project Healing Waters among other organizations. Many thanks go to the Hospice of the Piedmont for taking wonderful care of John during his final days. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 5181 Singleton Way, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, or Hospice of the Piedmont, Charlottesville.

John you will be sorely missed. I still recall with fond memories working with you many years ago at the Safety Office/City of Virginia Beach. Our condolences to the Kelly family. John was a wonderful man who always made me feel comfortable and welcome in his home. He was wise, compassionate, and kind. I will always be grateful that my daughter got to meet him. He spirit of compassion carries on with his children and grandchild. John was a person of true kindness and integrity. I worked for him for a number of years at the Jefferson Lab and always felt so fortunate to have him as a supervisor and friend. My condolences to the family at this difficult time.
