Virginia Beach - Lloyd Tilghman Tarbutton, "Til", of Naples, FL and Virginia Beach, VA went to be with his Lord on Friday, September 20, 2013. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved and cherished wife of 33 years, Layne Johnson Tarbutton and his sons, Greg A. Tarbutton (Anne) and Kent L.Tarbutton (Shelley) of Blowing Rock, NC, and C. Todd Woolston (Lisa) of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Morgan Tarbutton, Michelle Sandrock (Mark), Jeremy Tarbutton, Chelsea Mathis (John), Lennon Redford, Danielle Woolston, Kayla Woolston, Asja Martin and Taylor Woolston. Also surviving are sisters, Adele Fuchs (Ernie), Sue Shortall , and brothers S.J. Ireland and Stanley Tarbutton.
Born in Easton, Md.,in 1932,to William Lloyd and Ethel Tarbutton, he began his working career at the age of 12 after losing his father, leaving home at 15 to start making his way in the world. Moving to Va after high school, he began his studies at the Norfolk Division of William & Mary. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War. An avid student all his life, he returned to study real estate at the University of Va, business & finance at Georgetown University, continuing his education throughout his adult years. He held an Honorary Doctors Degree in Management and Marketing, was a Certified Hotel Administrator and held certifications as a Franchise Executive from Louisiana State University.
In 1962 he founded Tarbutton Associates, Inc. as a real estate company and through one of its divisions, later taught franchise marketing and management techniques in Europe, the Far East, the South Pacific and the Middle East as well as in the USA. In 1967, he co-founded the Econo Lodge motel and hotel chain where he served as Chairman, President and CEO. He is credited with creating the concept of the budget motel industry.
He served as Chairman of the Board of the International Franchise Association (IFA) Washington, DC, and was awarded the title of Honorary Lifetime Chairman of the Board.
For a number of years he was quite active serving as co-founder of the Franchise Political Action Committee, founder and Chairman of the Past President's Council in Washington and of the Franchise Suppliers Council. Under the auspices of the IFA he wrote and taught the first college course on the subject of franchising in 1978 at Virginian Wesleyan College. His book, 'Franchising- The How-To Book," published by Prentice-Hall, was the first of its type authorized and endorsed by the IFA. One of his greatest honors in 2000 was being elected to the Franchise Hall of Fame before over 2,000 members from 34 countries.
Among his many associations, he served over 20 years on the Norfolk Board of Directors of The Bank of Virginia (Wachovia/Wells Fargo), was a Director of the Old Dominion University Education Foundation and Chairman of the Board of the Old Dominion University Center of Economic Education. He was founder and chairman of the Free Enterprise Committee of the Chamber of Commerce which he developed to teach high school and college students about free enterprise and capitalism. He also was a volunteer with the International Executive Service Corps as a franchising and marketing consultant to second & third world countries. He was a highly publicized lecturer and writer on the subjects of franchising, marketing, salesmanship and creative management, often using the moniker "Captain Franchise".
For a number of years, Til served as a Deacon and teacher in the Presbyterian Church as well as a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Shrine.
After retirement Til finally took time to slow down and enjoyed all social activities with Layne, particularly tennis, dancing and traveling, often piloting his own plane. Known for his wit and humor, he was a master storyteller. His voracious appetite for learning, teaching and writing led him to pen many letters to his children, entitled "Dad's Training for Sons & Daughters". Of all his achievements and accolades, he felt his greatest and proudest accomplishment was being his sons' father.
The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful nurturing and care Til received from the entire community of The Glenview/Premier Place, and special gratitude to his private caregivers, Richmond and Ana who took such extraordinary and tender care of him.
In honor of his wishes, a family celebration will be held at a later date.
