Nell Richardson Obituary

Nell Elizabeth Bryant Richardson was born on May 19, 1930 in Nassawadox, Virginia and passed away on January 19, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Richard Orman and Nell Johnson Bryant and the sister of the late Jane Virginia Bryant and Anne Bryant Nock. Nell's father was a United Methodist minister and district superintendent, so during her childhood she moved frequently, as her father's church assignments took the family from Nassawadox to Richmond, Farmville, Lynchburg, Winchester, and Norfolk when she was growing up. When Nell was a junior in high school, her family was moved to Norfolk. Having attended Handley High School in Winchester, Nell was told that her education was not on par with Norfolk schools, and that she would be unable to transfer into 11th grade at Granby High School but instead repeat 10th grade; the Granby administrator did not even want to issue her textbooks. Nell's mother insisted that Nell was a very good student and so the administrator reluctantly agreed to let her transfer to 11th grade. Nell went on to become valedictorian of the Granby High School class of 1948. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in 1952 and majored in music with minors in math and chemistry, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She later received a master's degree in guidance and counseling and a certificate of advanced study from Old Dominion University.

Nell taught math at Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth from 1952 to 1956. She married Barrett Rives Richardson in 1954, and they had a loving and happy marriage for 66 years. Nell stayed at home to raise three children while being a church organist at Court Street Baptist Church and returned to her education career in the 1970s. She was principal of Alliance Christian High School in Portsmouth, taught math at Lynnhaven Junior High School, and was appointed assistant principal of Princess Anne High School in 1985. Nell loved teaching junior high and high school students.

One of Nell's biggest challenges as assistant principal of Princess Anne was the fire of September 1, 1995 which made Princess Anne unable to open on schedule that September. One of the casualties of the fire was the destruction of the master schedule for the school's 1900 students. Nell had to deal with the rescheduling for teachers and students alike, condensing the schedule for a shortened school day, shuffling classes into a new building and portable classrooms, and then converting everything to a block schedule. When school opened 11 days later, every student had a schedule. As a result, Nell was named "Assistant Principal of the Year" in 1986 by the Virginia School Boards Association. At Princess Anne, Nell also played a key role in initiating the Princess Anne Center for Pregnant Teens' program into the mainstream of the high school, the "School Within A School" model for ninth grade at-risk students, and the International Baccalaureate program. Until her retirement in 2004, Nell also very much enjoyed attending all of the PA students' athletic events after school and on weekends. After retirement, Nell volunteered to help senior citizens with tax preparation through AARP, and continued to play the organ at Court Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, a job she held and enjoyed for over 40 years. She and her husband also loved annual summer trips to Europe during her retirement years.

The family would like to thank caregivers Gaye Cuffee, Tamika Hunter, Jasmine Jones, and Etienne Williams for their love, kindness, patience, and professionalism while Nell and her late husband were residents of Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk, and express appreciation to the wonderful staff of Unity House at Bridgewater Home in Bridgewater for comfort and care in her final months.

Nell is survived by her children Ellen Richardson Davenport, Barrett Richardson, Jr., and John Bryant Richardson, and three granddaughters, Alice Brooks Davenport, Julia Barrett Davenport, and Sarah Lin Kerr-Applewhite.

Burial will be private, and a memorial service will be held for a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to the Endowment Fund of Monumental United Methodist Church or the Endowment Fund of Court Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia. www.SturtevantFH.com

I was saddened to learn about Nell´s passing. I taught Biology at Princess Anne High School for many years and was there until I retired the year before she did. So I saw firsthand daily the professionalism she demonstrated as Assistant Principal and great contribution she made for so many years to the success of our students and teachers.
What I will remember the most about Nell is how fortunate I was to have such a kind and considerate friend. My deepest sympathy goes to her family.

I was interviewed by Nell Richardson in 1985, and thus began my thirty year career at Princess Anne as an English teacher. In my first years, Mrs. Richardson was my department AP, and so she regularly observed my classes. She was always kind and professional, and I remember being surprised early on to learn that she had been a math teacher, since she seemed to know every piece of literature I shared with my students and her write-ups were flawless! She was always available to offer guidance and support, and I knew that her door was open to both me and my students.
I could tell so many little stories that reveal just how extraordinary Mrs. Richardson was as an AP, but I have decided on two.
In my first years at PA, I sponsored the yearbook. Each year when we reached our final deadline, we would have a small party and would invite our administrators. Since administrators are pretty busy, it was really a courtesy invite, but each year, Mrs. Richardson would drop by, sit with my small staff, nibble on a cookie or two, and ask the staffers specific questions about their contributions. Despite all her other obligations, she took the time to praise these students for their hard work and to make them feel valued. And, of course, this visit would be followed by a handwritten thank you note to share with my kids. What a wonderful example for my kids! What class!
My second story was probably seven or so years in. I was teaching in a portable and became very ill. We had no phones and it was pre-email. I sent one of my students to the office for help, and it seemed like only a couple minutes had passed when Mrs. Richardson walked into the room. She said she was so concerned, because I was never sick. She assisted me out of the classroom, offered to drive me home, and even called me later in the day to make sure I was okay. Wow, what a lady.
Mrs. Richardson was not just a "boss." I know she genuinely cared for me, my co-workers, and our students. She knew the types of novels I read for pleasure outside of school and asked me about them. She knew my family members and regularly asked about them. She sent little notes and cards that I know I have still tucked away with school mementos.
I was so fortunate to have Mrs. Richardson as a role model. I missed her when she retired, and I miss her now. But she was definitely a woman who made an impact in this world. My sincere sympathies to her family.

What an incredible life - so full of service! I was a freshman the year of the PA fire and am so grateful and amazed that she was able to remake the schedules for us all. My senior year (98-99), I was an office helper and she was such a nice, friendly person to work with. We (the students) knew she genuinely cared about us.
My condolences to the family. I will be praying for you during this difficult time.

Ms. Richardson was a shinning example to my 4 children while they attended PAHS. She always had a smiling face and gentle, fair nature. There was never any doubt about her dedication to the students and their welfare not only while under her care, but looking on to their future. Rest In Peace after many jobs well done

I didn't know a quarter of Mrs. Richardson's passions and accomplishments until reading her obituary but, even so, she was nonetheless one of the wisest and most admired mentor-administrators I experienced as a new teacher at PAHS. Her practical, compassionate, results-oriented approach to teaching and learning left a lasting positive impression. I am so grateful that her brand of professionalism was an integral part of my formative years as a teacher.

In the face of such a profound loss, I am lifting up her family and friends.

What a privilege and pleasure it was to work under Mrs. Richardson at Princess Anne High School. She was the consummate professional. I was always in awe of her skills at creating and adjusting that master schedule. She was, indeed, a master at her craft. I've said this before about Mrs. Richardson. She had the mind of a steel trap! She didn't forget anyone or anything. She was without a doubt one of the strongest administrators I've worked with in my nearly 40 years as a classroom teacher. She was on the interview committee that hired me for one of my most satisfying career experiences, that of English teacher at PAHS. May the good memories her family has of her sustain them in the difficult days and weeks ahead. As Susan Barnes noted, she was the epitome of the Southern woman - classy, endearing, and compassionate. Rest in peace, my dear lady!

Mrs. Richardson was the administrator in charge of the Arts Department when I moved to Virginia and started teaching orchestra at Princess Anne HS. She was a wonderful assistant principal, who balanced professionalism with warmth and caring. The master schedule has never been the same since she left PAHS. Mrs. Richardson touched many lives of teachers and students over the years; fond memories and love for her will be forever in our hearts.

An amazing lady who I loved working for. Too many adjectives to list that describe Mrs. Richardson. She was so kind to me as a young teacher and always had a smile on her face. Many of us still to this day say "no one could make a schedule like Nell." My sympathies to the family.

Nell's greatest accomplishmentat PAHS was the help she gave at-risk students. She reached out to these students and their parents, and I always was amazed at her energy and kindness in working with them. She excentuated her belief that the students could overcome the obstacles they faced. She stressed how their future actions could help them and that she believed they could succeed. Nell gave many discouraged students and parents hope. She was a shining person who made a difference every day. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Nell was always a caring soul who truly loved her job and did it in a professional and friendly manner. She frequently attended extra curricular events to support and encourage student's participation and achievements, and was a known friend of all students and staff members. She loved Princess Anne, and Princess Anne loved her back! She will be missed!

I´m so sorry to hear of Nell´s passing. I had the privilege i´m working with her at Princess Anne high school for 20 years. As a department chair I worked closely with her formulating the master schedule for our department and I greatly admired her dedication and professionalism. She was hard-working and compassionate and a pleasure to work with at all times. It was a joy to know her and I know she positively impacted hundreds of teachers and students during her career. What a wonderful legacy!

Mrs. Richardson was my AP at PA for many years until she retired. She was by far the best administrator I ever knew, one who truly appreciated the abilities of her teachers as individuals. She was warm, perceptive, compassionate, accomplished, and brilliant. Her grasp of the master schedule, and her ability to design one, were legendary. I can truly say that her encouragement helped me become a better teacher, and she always made me feel valued. Her humanity stood out, and I felt that I could talk to her honestly about anything. She was sorely missed after her retirement.

I will always be grateful for working under her, and it was not easy to recover from losing her. Her retirement left a void, and things were never the same. Her successors had tremendous shoes to fill.

I send all my best and my deepest condolences to her family . She was a very special person.
